RPG Evolution: The Coming Social Collapse

If you think about it, Local Game Stores and Creator Patreon Discords share a similar purpose: Community-as-a-Service Forums are very good for tracking lengthy discussions between few individuals, but scale poorly to a certain point before threads devolve into chaos and many parallel...

RPG Evolution: The Coming Social Collapse

People yearn for community. They're starving. We have 9001 ways to play D&D Medieval Fantasy Role-Playing Games but still haven't solved large scale "Interest Matchmaking" in the space, seemingly.

    D&D 5E (2024) Take A Deeper Look At The New D&D Starter Set's Card-Based Characters

To be fair, since The Edition That Must Not Be Named, Magic the Gathering has grown a lot among the casual playerbase and the now premier format (100 card singleton elder dragon highlander/commander released in 2011 and has never stopped growing) regularly ends up with board states like this:

    D&D 5E (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

I mean these are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Goldeneye was not a Sandbox and I still played the Dam level every once in a while to replay it. I can see players replaying the same adventure and scenarios using different classes in this boardgame-like arrangement.

D&D General Mike Mearls sits down with Ben from Questing Beast

Can you believe they are updating the Core Rulebooks again? Like I love a good errata and layout reformatting but this stuff is getting ridiculous... Well at least the SRD is public...

Yes a 1% decrease is a real decline, but if it comes after a 100%+ growth spurt it is a simple Return to the Mean and not necessarily indicative of future performance. Also while growth rate is ideally above inflation and constantly high, that is highly industry dependent. Not every industry can...

Compare Consolidated Revenue of Hasbro in 2023 to 2024. WotC staying flat is saving Hasbro's butt

I mean we don't have to read tea leaves. Hasbro is a publicly traded company. A 1% decline is a nothingburger especially if you look at prior revenue. I can't believe it took this many pages for someone to look up what WotC made prior to 2023. (These are actually wotc numbers, whoever made this...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Saving Throw DCs just be Ability Scores?

You have found a very fun houserule for your group and I am glad that you guys are having fun. But that doesn't mean it is going to be the same for everyone or that is in the spirit of the design. Obviously players like being more powerful. We are not telling you that you are having fun the...

MtG is doing really well. They just a hit a billion of revenue this year. It is much much bigger than D&D, which is why I personally think they need the game to be even more player facing, preferrably digitally.

Whatever D&D makes is probably still not enough according to WotC/Hasbro suits. Mainly TTRPG gamers might think that WotC is in some insane monopoly money printing position, but in terms of monetization and raw sales it lags far behind MtG so much that Hasbro desperately tries to hide its annual...

I don't disagree but I am not arguing against complexity for all TTRPGs. I know people can handle complexity. I also play Pathfinder. I am just saying that Larian adding more complex rules to a video game carries negligible cost compared to adding them to a board game.

BG3 is a video game powered by a computer that is on average about ten thousand times more powerful than the computer that put mankind on the moon

I also want to add that Feats are now non-optional rules and also tied to backgrounds, the basic rules of 2024 and I imagine the coming SRD only feature 4 out of 16 so character creation at LEVEL1 has been heavily limited which is terrible for Adventurer's League and just introductory games
