D&D 5E (2024) Should Saving Throw DCs just be Ability Scores?

I think we need to delineate two things How Saving Throw DCs are calculated What kind of play you wanna foster in your game, make certain actions more attractive In your case, you houseruled the calculation method on how Saving Throw DCs are calculated, to guide players more towards...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Saving Throw DCs just be Ability Scores?

Then the numbers would be different to what the design intended. Saving throws are something you calculate once each time your character levels up or gains a bonus, which is not something that happens often enough to where it warrants an easier calculation method.

D&D General Mike Mearls sits down with Ben from Questing Beast

The characters have much more options, those character building options are a lot more involved because backgrounds now tie to ability score improvements AND feats and for a lot of class features those weapon masteries kind of matter, so omitting them would be neutering the design of D&D2024...

D&D General Mike Mearls sits down with Ben from Questing Beast

I mean the title isn't even that disingenious or clickbaity. In this episode, Mike Mearls talks about how 5E tried to make the game run simpler before the 3.5/4e days and how 5.5 just added those back in, referring to how the design goal of 5E "falls apart" The title does not say "D&D is dead...

WotC What 2024 rules would you take with you into a prospective 2014 5E Retroclone?

I'm a bit torn on the Weapon Mastery property rules. One one hand they are interesting tactical choices but I am not a fan of how they let Martials "DIY" their own favorable conditions through mechanics and weapons juggling. Like a Rogue using Vex to gain Sneak Attack on the next round.

QuestWorlds is coming—who else is hyped?

I have glanced over the SRD, does this play similar to Powered by the Apocalypse/Forged in the Dark family of games, albeit with crunchier character options? The way the contest procedures arise to resolve conflict with varying degrees of success feels very similar to the Move Resolution mechanic.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

That is not an issue because Paizo wisely recognized that in-combat hiding is too contingent on GM Fiat and wonky rulings so they changed sneak attack to not care about stealth exclusively, but includes all ways to trigger Off-Guard. (Which is how they buffed Rogue in 2024 with Vex Mastery btw)...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

Fig. a Fig. b Fig. c Actually I would argue the opposite, the new wording covers a surprising amount of edge cases and makes Hiding in combat a lot less dependent on DM Fiat which is a huge boon for rogues. Also Invisible condition is lost really fast, because Invisible has also been...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

Fighter gets to deal consistent higher than cantrip damage for free. This is important as to preserve high level spell slots and not waste them on excess damage. They also zone off mobs from backline with high AC, also for free. At least in theory.

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

I like to play a Fighter at AL when I am too tired from the work week, don't want to have large turns and still want to engage in role play. Stick my ass in the middle of the battle, trigger opportunity attacks, rip out cheesy one-liners, break down a door or two, have 3 beers, have a grand old...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

Saying that resting for a day will result in consequences is not DM deciding when people rest. Some might say that is exactly good game play

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

I think that rest assumes that either adventures have a sense of urgency (dwindling rations, evil progressing in their plans) built in or that you don't handwave away dangerous encounters if you rest somewhere non-safe. Mind you that you only recover HP at the END of a Long Rest.
