D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

the OP state a Wall of force protecting a sacred key. The first error would be to use Wall of force into the description to players unless a trained arcanist identify the effect. An invisible barrier leave some hope and interpretation both side of the screen. Then there are the mood and time...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

I guess I could manage to play any half caster and pretend to be a mundane warrior. Favoring some spell and ability would help describe the fluff of mundane ability. A little help from the DM would be useful. On the same way, I would have no problem to pretend be a psionic powered character...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

As I player my job is to describe what I want to do, and react to DM description. If my DM say : »you are dead« I would say stop! Let me first describe the scene of how my head is smashed away by the giant! I wouldn’t not argue about the DC or other technical detail.

We play from 3 to 7th level. Honestly if my DM tell me my monk don’t have his ki power due to an anti magic zone, I would interpret that my savage monk feel his instinct interfere by some wicked magic. As a player I would continue interpreting my monk according to DM description. That is...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

Recently I play a monk into an orc and goblins adventure. I present it as an instinctive warrior, kicking, biting, striking vulnerable spot by instinct, I transform the monk into a savage brutal half orc. nobody around the table argue against that. mundane, magical, supernatural are highly...

    D&D 5E (2024) High Tiers = Superheroes

That is DnD, writing those Lore and managing world with immortal or super heroic characters. Each DM will make his solution. If the game was managing and balancing everything it would be a lame.

    D&D 5E (2024) High Tiers = Superheroes

For my understanding I rather use 1-4 minor league, in training, often disorganized 5-10 professional: warrior, wizard, criminal 11-16 Elite status. Special ops military, gifted wizard, uncanny assassins. 17+ Legendary. Best of his generation. Seen only once every ten years.

    D&D 5E (2024) High Tiers = Superheroes

The problem with those assumptions and rule of thumb, they got derailled as soon as you are concretely playing high level on a regular basis. To sustain a high level adventure you need a immense amount of legendary characters or even only famous like a 12th level character. all of them will be...

Actually the game allow that. Players describe want he want his character to do. DM say: Yes, No, ask a roll, or rely on a precise game mechanic, then describe more clearly the result.

That is a cool and underused DM trick, using critical hit to shape the fight on favor of one side or the other.

I like it, to have more flavor a DM can use the Balor, the Marillith, the Pit fiend as template to create a badass mighty warrior.

I think that one thing that fuel this war, is that people seek a rule set that fit perfectly their needs in term of challenge, play style, world building assumptions, etc. While the designers are trying to make a rule set that offer the greatest possible variety of challenge, play style and...

D&D 5E (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

In 5ed there is no rules or even hint about the rarity or the commonly of high level character. On the other hand there is plenty of assumptions and tropes that come form older editions. A DM may put all his plots in a small kingdom, or into a tribal or post apocalyptic world. the social role...

There are numerous way to describe a 20th level character, a kind of super hero that watch over the world, a agent or knight at the service of a powerful kingdom, or a trash character that sometime have problem to pay for a beer in a inn.
