D&D 5E (2014) Oh god, not goblins again...

I personally enjoy reskinning based on mythological creatures. It is possible to find great artwork online, plus I can tweak them to better fit the adventure or to thwart player expectations without having to justify changing core monsters.

D&D 5E (2014) What does your Forgotten Realms look like?

I use bits and pieces from through out each addition but my players don't care about canon. That said a few were interested in some parts of Eberron in 3.5. Mainly races, changelings, warforged, and shiftets also the artificer. Instead of fully converting I just pull in a bit more time. I feel...

D&D 5E (2014) NPC Ability Checks and Stunting or...Ogre Smash

Isn't the ogre knocking down the tree by definition showing its training or ability. Why would he have to first commit some other act to demonstrate his ability. It was mentioned that most classes don't grant expertise in athletics but again the rules for building, advancing, tweaking monsters...

D&D 5E (2014) NPC Ability Checks and Stunting or...Ogre Smash

I agree that the PCs and NPCs should not follow the same guidelines. I think that was done for 3.5 and you often wonky or down right terrible effects. I also like that monsters and NPC creation uses a different set of guides since the goals are not really the same. Based on the original post by...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Good PLayers Do Not Homebrew

Or, if the intent is to only allow the life drain on one attack, use a similar format to Sneak Attack (1/turn).

D&D 5E (2014) Why Good PLayers Do Not Homebrew

I like the monster, but I would make some formatting changes. Primary is it aligns more with other monsters. The life drain weapon attack should be separated into two sections. The life drain should go in the before the actions, worded something like anytime the battle wight hits with a melee...

D&D 5E (2014) NPC Ability Checks and Stunting or...Ogre Smash

I think the more relevant question to ask is, how closely should the skill system try to model real world physics. The granularity necessary, would make for an intensely complicated rules system. If we are going to enjoy a system where we use a to hit vs. AC model to demonstrate all of the...

D&D 5E (2014) NPC Ability Checks and Stunting or...Ogre Smash

I do enjoy the ideas and discussion, but I do take umbrage with the obvious meta-gaming from a player perspective in your example. For example, what if the DM had decided to make a more athletic ogre, or one that has proficiency, or expertise in Strength (athletics). As for the rules in the DMG...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing order

Yes but a DM could also rule per RAW "When you use the attack action with unarmed strike or monk weapon" so not an "attack" but the action itself which would preclude using both weapons during the action, so actually after further reading by RAW no. However I could see a DM overrule that easily...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing order

Missed the last part of the question about extra attack having both the shortsword and rapier, sorry. By Raw I think you would be correct 1st attack with rapier 2nd and 3rd (bonus action) with Shortsword.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing order

So your basic question is can a monk attack with a rapier, yes. This was a bit confusing because of the comment about having the shortsword in the other hand, which makes no sense, why would you not make all attacks with the rapier. As for Martial Arts, a monk can use monk weapons including the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing order

The monk can not attack using Martial Arts with the rapier as it is not a monk weapon, also they could not make two attacks until 5th level (with extra attack) and shadow step, as both are bonus actions and you only ever get one bonus action per round. After 5th they could use shadow step (bonus...

D&D 5E (2014) Rule Fails and Failing Rules!

After reading some of the ideas in the DMG I found one very intriguing... Success at a cost on pg. 242. It was a blast but after a more attentive reading I realized how badly, I had it screwed it up. To begin I read rolling a 1 (critical failure) instead of missing by a 1 or 2. It allows the...

D&D 5E (2014) Rogues are badass mounted combatants...

Am missing something because this should not work. Rogue gets dash, disengage, or hide as abonus action. It takes an action to controll a mount which would not count in there bonus actio. While you could move, attack, and disengage as normal your mount is not and therefore draing the attack, no?

    D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons—Dragon & Icons of the Realms Minis

Should of dug more before posting, apparently the Tyranny of the Dragon Hoard Cultists are from Gale Force 9, just visited their site. A set of unpainted miniatures that correspond to the major villains of the story. I might just have to pull out my old set of tools and paint these guys up...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons—Dragon & Icons of the Realms Minis

Thought I would share some thoughts, picked a few boosters at mt FLGS and they are really nice. Fell a bit heavier and sturdier than previous WotC sets from the past. Never bought Pathfinder minis didn't like some of the concept art but heard they were good too. Got the hobgoblin fighter looks...

    D&D 5E (2014) FGG/Necromancer Games teases 5th Edition Foes

Sorry didn't I meant will the are represent more static 2d portraits or more like the newer dynamic actiony 3d style visualization. Will the book and art be BW or more color images?

    D&D 5E (2014) FGG/Necromancer Games teases 5th Edition Foes

I really love the monster and the fluff, love the old school creatures. That being the case I did want to ask about the art. I do realize that the art is also very old school in theme. Howverr as I DM with younger players preteen who love to see and get excited by the flashier art of newer...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unfortunate Wording

While I can appreciate both rulings based on the game. I am also waiting to see more on scroll treasure rules in the DMG. With PCs no longer to purchase magical items such as scrolls in town based on my understanding from PHB rules. Also with craft time even for 1st lvl scrolls likely taking 50+...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing... in or out?

Thank you, Kobold Stew I fully agree on letting thier creativity being the driving force. They are both young teens though my 9 year old niece has recently joined. It has been an immense pleasure and truly rekindled my own joy for the game. After thinking through your comment I realize I am...
