BitD Hack - Military Campaign Progress

One thing I have learned over the years is that my gaming group does not enjoy when rules change once the game is in progress. I can play around with the rules to my heart's content before the campaign starts, but have to be much more restrictive once the characters have been made and adjusted...

BitD Hack - Military Campaign Progress

I'll be playing un the World of Greyhawk and likely with hexes, so the PCs would thread a path. I hope to set things up so that the PCs can take the quick and hard path or the longer and easier path. Band of Blades seems to be a must-have once (if?) I become serious about a campaign like this...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e Players: How often have you been allowed to use 3PP?

Facebook introduced a "care for" emote during the pandemic. Parts of this thread made me wish for that here on En World. So, for what its worth, I sympathize with all the trouble people are having getting to play the games they want. * Hug

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

The HD mechanic and short rests allows spells to be used for things other than healing. Great for bards, clerics, and druids as long as their chosen role was not to be a healer.

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

A large part of why we have rules is to enforce genre. If survival trekking is the genre you want to play in, by all means do. But check with your players if this is the genre THEY want to play in. Personally, I find the resource management part of D&D to be a bore and prefer to handwave...

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

There was a row with an author that felt their scenario had been butchered in editing, which supports your line here. Having played more than half of Candlekeep, the scenarios feel somewhat bare bones, but how well this works varies widely. The closer the scenario is to the dungeon model, the...

You did it perfectly, I was just putting what you did in formal terms.

Just the kind of critique that helps me, thanks. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Played another session with my kids (Actual play report)

It was criticism, but not harshly intended - I just reacted to the unusually high number. It seems you set this up as a combat encounter, and getting around a combat encounter with social skills should be hard, or you won't have any combat encounters once the bard get's Eagle's Splendor. :)

D&D General Is it cheesy to power down monsters? Also, has anyone done "Them Apples" from Dungeon #48?

Chris Perkins was the editor of Dungeon Magazine for a long time - I have had the honor of getting a personal letter of refusal from him. He has loads of experience and is overall a good guy.

Area effects and AC. Particularly in 3E and derivates, AC was king. This is still so in 5E, if to a lesser degree with bounded accuracy. If the monsters only hit on a 20, numbers don't matter nearly as much. A hearsay anecdote from a campaign I never played in, that feature lots and lots of...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e Players: How often have you been allowed to use 3PP?

That a lot of 3PP is crap does not mean that a lot of 3PP can also be great - as long as "a lot" is less than 50%. :) And even then, tastes differ. I was not stating a truism, I was making an evaluation according to my own tastes. Some 1PP are also in need of edits, even if I am sometimes...

BitD Hack - Military Campaign Progress

I agree on how this could work in a modern setting. I think Band of Brothers and the like could work, or perhaps each player in control of a Band of Brothers-like unit. I want PCs responsible some of the supply issues. Basically, both supply and connections to base and advancing would be...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e Players: How often have you been allowed to use 3PP?

Sadly, a lot of 3P content is crap. I generally rewrite anything I import this way and post it on the campaign wiki. So saying I allow "3P-inspired" is perhaps more correct than saying I allow 3P content.

D&D General Is it cheesy to power down monsters? Also, has anyone done "Them Apples" from Dungeon #48?

I remember reading this scenario. To me it seems like a one-shot rather than a part of a campaign because it is potentially so deadly. I could see this as a scenario at a role-playing convention where most of the PCs are expected to die in comedic horror. If you want to use it as a part of a...

D&D 5E (2014) Played another session with my kids (Actual play report)

Nice story, great way to spend time with your kids. Love the clever repeat experiment. :) DC 20 is a very high DC in 5E

D&D 5E (2014) How much should it cost to use a permanent teleportation circle?

I find this a good way to bring various in-world organizations into play. You want to use the city's teleport circle? Have you been a productive citizen and helped the city government? Want to use the druid's sacred stone circles (yes, druids use these in my games). Better be very well...

D&D 5E (2014) It's Official! Most of my encounters are "Deadly" (now updated with info through the end of 2022!)

The problem with old scenarios with doom clocks is that they often don't tell the players there is a doom clock. This is a big problem, especially if the players are unused to doom clocks. Picture is just a somewhat on-concept joke, not to be taken seriously. :D
