Planescape Planescape IS D&D Says Jeremy Crawford

I think I largely agree with you, even speaking as someone who adored the 2e Planescape line. Planescape works better - at least for me - when I think of it as it’s own setting, rather than a mandatory meta-setting. Zeb Cook even said as much in the interview linked up thread.

Planescape Planescape IS D&D Says Jeremy Crawford

I'm always a bit torn when the topic of metaplots comes up: One one hand? I definitely had a shelf of White Wolf books that I genuinely enjoyed reading, and I think back on very fondly. I got a lot of enjoyment out of those books, both reading, cross-referencing, and dreaming about the worlds...

Planescape Planescape IS D&D Says Jeremy Crawford

Speaking as a “back in the day” D&D nerd, I always thought it was neat that you could simultaneously have Planescape where everything was connected, and Dark Sun* and Eberron where they somewhat expressly weren’t. *Yes, I know about the gith and the Blackspine mountains. I think it’s a bit silly.

D&D General Nolzur creates inclusive miniatures, people can't handle it.

This was what struck me during the kerfuffle awhile back when someone posted their homebrew rules on Twitter for a combat wheelchair - some people were very happy to see themselves represented in the game, and some people explicitly made comments along the lines of, “…dude, I use a wheelchair in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Check Out Planescape's Table of Contents & More!

I was kind of hoping to see the Animal Lords if the focus was going to be on the Outlands, but that looks like a pretty legit bestiary.

It’s thievery - like referring to something as a ‘second story job’. Or, in another context, referring to someone as a ‘spook’, ‘mole’, or as ‘coming in from the cold’.

I mean, one of the purposes of a slang is to obsfucate what you’re talking about.

I loved the Cant too, but a lot of people loathed it. I’m not shocked to see it omitted.

I'll admit that I found 3e's "dungeon punk" aesthetic very cool at the time, but it hasn't aged well - I certainly don't have the nostalgia for it that I have for a fair amount of 2e art. I don't care what WAR says, not everything needs to be covered in belts and angst.

The only part of this approach that truly bums me out is the art direction: Dark Sun and Planescape felt truly different than a Forgotten Realms game, in no small part because of DiTerlizzi and Brom's visions for those worlds. Van Richtens and Rising from the Last War are both very solid books...

I don’t disagree, but I do think that ‘this is the core box for this line, further support is on its way” lands different than “this is probably the only product you’re going to get”.

I think this point of design has changed over the years: ‘Princes of the Apocalypse’ has this - and includes advice on how to run it in Dark Sun! - but I don’t believe most of the 5e campaign books do. That being said, I haven’t read everything for 5e; others might weigh in.

In fairness, I was a huge fan of Planescape in the 90s, and for boxed sets I only had the core one and Planes of Law, because those were the only two I could find. These things didn’t have voluminous print runs, and this was before Amazon.

Anyone got Into the Wyrd and Wild?

I actually bought my copy almost purely based on how gentlemanly and honestly the author took and responded to criticism from Skerples.

In fairness, after Skerple's review, the author revised the text and included, among other things, and index and encounter table: reddit link.

The freaking cookbook outsold the 3.5 PHB. That's bonkers to me, and I own both!

I’d be curious to see Spelljammer sales numbers against the Ravenloft and Eberron books, personally.
