A little variation could be brought in by being a barbarian. Raging gives benefit to grappling checks and overall damage, although it deviates from fluff slightly. Also hand crossbows. Snake is usually using single handed pistols, so crossbow mastery and sharpshooter can be feat choices...

in 2e a lvl 1 wizard can finish off an ogre in a 1v1. That is not possible in 5e as the systems are really different.

But I reckon it works against other creatures that have regeneration not dependent on fire. Or creatures that cast restorative spells. at least in theory.

I haven't had much experience of the really high levels. highest I've ever played was level 13 at the end of a pathfinder campaing, which was started at level 10.
