"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

Well, at least we've established that Celeborn sailed West. Yes, but a reasonable inference - otherwise Cirdan would have remained, and Celeborn wouldn't have been the last living memory of the Elder Days in Middle-Earth. I suppose Cirdan might have sailed before him, and Celeborn built his own...

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

It’s in the Prologue: a Note on the Shire Record. More generally, I’m using the term “consistent” to mean “systematic; logically coherent.” I have a fairly permissive view of “consistent.” You’re using it to mean “a place for everything, and nothing out of place.” This seems quite rigid.

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

Technically, the "Last Ship" is the one which Cirdan and Celeborn take some time in the Fourth Age. It must be after year FoA 171, as a note in the Thain's Book - transcribed from the Red Book of Westmarch says that Cirdan might still live at the Grey Havens. Arwen also has the opportunity to...

    D&D 3.x The 4E We Didnt Get.

Another vote for Trailblazer by Benjamin Durbin. Available here: https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/64009/Trailblazer I think however you intend to overhaul 3.X - and preferences will vary greatly in this regard - that this is an invaluable resource in understanding the math which...

D&D General The most played D&D Adventure of all time

I last ran B2 in 2021. Also ran it in 2015, in 2006, in 1996, in 1990, and several times in the 1980s - probably three times; it's been a while. It was also the second game I played in as a player, although it was AD&D, not B/X. I don't think I'm unusual in having played this module to death...

    Single System Monogamy

I play D&D (various iterations), Classic Traveller and Pendragon, and nothing else at this point. I guess that makes me some kind of sororate trigamist.

    Terrible sequels

I'd argue a similar decline in the Terminator and Predator franchises, although I regard The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Predator: Prey to be partially redemptive.

    Terrible sequels

I feel that the decline in the Alien franchise has been pretty consistent. I loved Aliens when it came out, and I still think it's a good movie, but in hindsight it doesn't really hold a torch to the original. Alien 3 is passable, and I'd argue rather underrated Alien Resurrection is bad. (Joss...

Ed Greenwood retweets homophobic Indiegogo campaign, is also Senior Editor on project

I read the first part of the Reddit thread for some context. It seems that the issue is with tokenistic representation (Snowflake and Safespace are/were actual comic book characters; I had no idea), and Ed (or the original tweet) was advocating for deeper storytelling. Still, it behooves him...

    Your most pointless TV/movie/book nitpicks

Season 5 Episode 10, Game of Thrones. Stannis and his army walk up to Winterfell and get trounced. There are no scouts, no piquets, no baggage train and camp followers. Just a bunch of blokes with swords plodding through the snow. The complete lack of planning is contrary to everything we know...

    Cookin again

Phenylthiocarbamide tastes bitter to around 50% of the population because of a mutation in the TAS2R38 gene which codes your taste receptors. So I don't blame you.

    Cookin again

It's hard to get good mushy peas, and most places where you buy them they're from #10 cans because it's not practical to make them properly. If I make them, I use dried marrowfat peas soaked for 24hrs, rinsed, and simmered slowly in salted water for 4-5 hours. I then add lots of cracked black...

    Cookin again

To be fair, the uniform flavours offered by the trinity (Creole), mirepoix (French), soffritto (Italian/Spanish) or the other sofrito (Latin/Caribbean) have their functional analogue in curry sauce (fenugreek-turmeric-chili-cumin-coriander-garlic-onion-ginger + whatever carrier - tomato, yogurt...

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

I think this is an important observation. We tend to think of 5th level as low or low-mid level, but characters are already capable of routinely performing superheroic actions.

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

Re: the playability of high level 3.X I think some genuine, valid criticisms can be levelled at ease of play for high level 3E; I mean, it's not something which you can casually hop into and expect to work seamlessly. That said, I find it eminently playable. I think you need to put the work...

Rank the Star Trek TOS movies

Rather predictably: 1. The Wrath of Khan 2. The Undiscovered Country 3. The Voyage Home 4. The Search for Spock 5. The Motion Picture 6. The Final Frontier I think the Motion Picture was ambitious, but it comes across as too grim and too ... drab and brown.
