    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Cosmology

As I worked on the diagram, WotC sent me the Planescape symbols for use in the Outer Planes, to spice those circles up, which was a was choice on their part.

    D&D 5E (2014) Finally

The Astral encompasses all Outer Planes. The Ethereal surrounds all Inner Planes. The names of the Outer Planes are the same from Planescape (Bytopia, Elysium, Ysgard, etc). The Positive and Negative planes form two concave shells that cover the "ball" of the Multiverse, leaving a gap between...

You can see the planes a bit in the Dread Gazebo flipthrough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V9gB9tvKZI (jump to 55:26).

D&D 5E (2014) XP Progression in Lost Mine of Phandelver [SPOLIERS!]

I agree on the shallower power curve. If the DM allows the PCs to level up during the foray into Wave Echo Cave, I don't think it's particularly necessary to advance them to 4th. But I like my group's advancements to happen between sessions, instead of having to sit down and level up in the...

D&D 5E (2014) XP Progression in Lost Mine of Phandelver [SPOLIERS!]

Rewarding story goals and roleplaying with XP *is* a part of the XP system (4e had Major and Minor Quests, 2e had Class-specific XP rewards, 1e had XP-for-gold, etc). Grinding through monsters just to fill out a XP quota can lead to a boring slog. Plus, the OP said that the players would be...

Just level them up to 4th, for completing a story milestone, when they complete Cragmaw Castle.

D&D 5E (2014) A Bit More on Subclasses from the Escapist

It's not "is not supposed to", it's "chooses not to". The trade-off you make is focusing on Dex instead of Str. The mechanical advantage is superior mobility and stealth, instead of 1 point of average DPR and better grappling.

Then don't cast mage armor, just put on some studded leather, which coupled with Dex 17 gives you a starting AC 15 (up to 17 with Dex 20). As a Fighter, you can pick up the Defense fighting style for +1 AC, so you'll top out at AC 18 (same as chainmail + shield). Or, you can pick up a shield and...

D&D 5E (2014) A Bit More on Subclasses from the Escapist

You don't need encouragement to play a finesse-based character. the trade-off youll be getting for not putting on heavy armor is that you won't have to focus on Strength, instead boosting your Dex, which will govern your melee and ranged attacks, damage, initiative, stealth and a very common...

    D&D 5E (2014) Barbarian preview!

Cary Nord (from the first few years of the Dark Horse comic book) did the full range, from banana hammock to fully armored:

Any fighter can be Dex-based. Just put on light (or medium, even) armor and pick up a finesse weapon, and you're golden!

Quoted For Truth. Between stuff like Hunter's Mark and Longstrider (among others), there's enough "quasi-mundane" abilities to mimic a "spell-less ranger".

    D&D 5E (2014) Barbarian preview!

Dragonlance was funny with those terms. They had Mountain Barbarians (Vikings), Ice Barbarians (Inuit), Plains Barbarians (Native Americans), Desert Barbarians (Touaregs) and Sea Barbarians (pirates).

    D&D 5E (2014) Barbarian preview!

Riverwind and Goldmoon's culture was called "Plains Barbarians", but Riverwind was always a Ranger (Tanis, although he *looks* like a Ranger, was actually a half-elf Fighter).
