    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hobgoblin stat block

Being CR 1/2 means that a 1st-level party with four characters will be squaring off against two hobgoblins. Well, four-against-two means that the hobgoblins will have a difficult time using Martial Advantage (they won't be able to spare their attacks for the PC facing off against their buddy)...

Those don't seem likely to influence character creation. And let's say the weakest character in the group got a pair of Gauntlets of Ogre Power. What would he do with it? If it's a wizard, all this means is that the wizard can now swing a quarterstaff with +4 to hit and damage. Still less...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hobgoblin stat block

It means a party of four 7th-level adventurers would find the creature a moderate-to-challenging fight. It would probably be very difficult for 6th-level PCs and mop the floor with lower-level ones. CR is a guideline for when the creature enters the game without causing a TPK. If you have...

And how would they get one? Magic items in 5e are strictly the purview of the DM, so players shouldn't build characters predicated on finding this or that item.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hobgoblin stat block

From a D&D Q&A from a while back: So a party of four 1st-level PCs would have a moderate-to-challenging fight with two hobgoblins.

    D&D 5E (2014) Basic DnD: Classes?

"Bored" is a subjective, unquantifiable variable (one could get bored without finishing a single campaign, others play OD&D nonstop since 1974). What we *can* count (and which was the question of the poster I replied to) is the number of possible characters. By that baseline, Basic D&D will...

    D&D 5E (2014) Basic DnD: Classes?

4 classes x 4 races x (at least) 4 backgrounds = 64 possible characters. Add to that the possibility of different approaches to the classes (as evidenced by the two, very different Fighters), and you get a lot of mileage out of Basic. A 4-player group could play 16 campaigns without repeating a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set: Except 7

That is also pretty much the ogre from the D&D Dungeon Command set Blood of Gruumsh: Which is, in turn, pretty much the ogre from the concept art by Conceptopolis:

I regularly DM for 3 PCs, and I remove 1/4 of the monsters' numbers in a given encounter.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Unboxing Starter Set Video is on Youtube

    1. You can play with only one set of dice (since everyone acts in turns, not simultaneously), but that'd slow things down. At the very least, I'd recommend two sets of dice (one for the DM, one for the players). Ideally, everyone should have their own set. 2. That's more of a personal taste...

Or you could limit it to only being useable within 1 minute of taking a wound. That makes it an immediate resource. After that it's resting, HD and magic.

The first exposure to the game also (likely) includes guidelines on how to DM the included adventures, and that could also mean random encounters, where to rest (and for how long), etc. So a 1st-level Fighter begins with 13 hp (for instance). If he's down to, say, 3, he can use Second Wind to...

Only if you're really low level, where 3d10 (avg 10.5) + 3x level is enough to heal you up to full. In one hour, a 10th level Fighter (per the video) might instead spend 10d10 (avg 35) + 10x Con mod.

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set: Excerpt 6

Armored movement is hardly the most important racial bility of a dwarf, IMHO. And magic items are not "just". They have impact on the character's overall power (as opposed to being assumed in the math). Your half-orc will probably have Str 20 before magic gauntletes come along.

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set: Excerpt 6

Since the halfling isn't wearing heavy armor, and has attacks that use Dexterity, he won't be able to benefit from either item. In fact, the dwarf should get the gauntlets and the half-orc should get the boots, so both characters now have Str 19 and aren't slowed down by armor (and the half-orc...

Thanks, y'all. But in the spirit of not derailing the thread, I'd ask that we focus on the actual 5e artwork. If anyone'd like to discuss my personal takes on these creatures, please start a new thread for that and I'd be happy to participate and show more stuff. Cheers!
