Monsters with spell lists is not a good sign

If its somewhat limited it might be tolerable. In PF its bad, because there are so many monsters with spell like abilities that work like spells, monsters with feats, and special qualities and all this stuff you have to look up, that its just a nightmare for DM prep. We have burned through 3 PF...

Monsters with spell lists is not a good sign

After the joy and ease of running 4e monsters, both me and my current Pathfinder DM both agree that monsters with spell lists is a potential deal breaker. He hates that he can't run a PF game without d20pfsrd.com due to monster stat blocks with feats and spells that have to be looked up in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Armor in D&DNext

The armor system is just wonky. 4e's elegant handling of light (stat mod + AC) and heavy armor (just AC) was really much better than this. 4e style armor is simple and elegant which fits in with the design ethos of DnDNext and it should be something both new and old school players can agree on.

So the playtest packages coming online tonight at midnight or tomorrow?

Their web articles and such almost always go up at 9pm Pacific Time the day before (because its midnight on the east coast). I'm hoping they follow that pattern here. :)

So the playtest packages coming online tonight at midnight or tomorrow?

My Thursday game group is chomping at the bit to get started, but we want enough time on Thursday prior to the game to read and asborb the rules before we play. I'm wondering if WotC will continue their tradition of posting new web content at 9 PST / 12 EST, or will post sometime tomorrow...

    D&D 5E (2014) Last minute 5e prognostications

5e will come with an auction house! When my DM gives me a Holy Avenger, I can try to sell it to other D&D players for real money. :p

L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

As long as HD are only used for recovery and actual HP per level are fixed, then I'm cool with this. Of course, I never minded surges in the first place.

    D&D 5E (2014) I want a return to long duration spells in D&D Next.

There needs to be two types of spell durations. Encounter and all day. Tracking rounds, minutes, tens of minutes, hours is just an annoyance. From a balance perspective, I'm cool with all day spells if wizards have fewer spells slots. In 3e wizards have way too many slots, but if you got only...

Wands and Staffs: Impliment or Spell Containers

Wands and staves as implements, no question. Or have both if some OSR fans are really passionate about having charged wands. I don't mind themed wands either, like a wand of fire that is better at casting fire magic (but could still be used for other types of magic except maybe cold). But the...

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

I don't want "miscast" or "dangerous" magic except for rituals. No other class gets class abilities that can randomly screw them or the party, nor should there be for any class. It should be an option for those who want it, but not default. If plot breaking magic is confined to rituals then...

D&D blog: goblin care only about your axe

I really dig this column. It sounds exactly like what I want in 5e combat. 75% of the time, I want quick and cinematic old school no minis 1e style combat with some movement, but movement thats easy to adjudicate without squares or a grid. But also works such that players don't feel like they...

    "Aggro"

I don't like either one. And 4e doesn't really have aggro mechanics. 4e marking gives defenders some mechanical options and counters to protect their fellow party members if monsters choose to ignore them. But the DM still has control over what the monsters do.

D&D 5E (2014) new Critical Hits article about running DnD next

Indeed. WotC came to the same conclusion when they came up with Healing Surges. And they did in fact revolutionize gaming. ;) The problem is that there are two completely different types of D&D play. On the one hand you have people like me who want to play D&D as cinematic action. Kick in the...

    DCC is DDNext

Sorry, I came off somewhat snide. My apologies. :) But I do disagree with you that they have solved a number of these issues. 5e is trying to reconcile different playstyles and different generations of gamers who all have different editions they enjoy. DCC is really focused on only one of...

    DCC is DDNext

I spent years playing old school D&D. I have no interest in going back to it. From what I have read, DCC is all about the worst kinds of old school play that I left behind long ago when I grew up. I have zero interest in random character generation, killer dungeons, DMs out to screw you, items...

    "Aggro"

As a DM, I LOVE 4e's marking mechanics. When I play the monsters I like to go all out. My job as the monster is in most cases to annihilate the party. And I will do that in the most efficient and brutal manner possible. I loathe having to role-play the monsters with one-hand tied behind my...

    A Hope: Return Variability/Randomness

Some variance in say monster HPs, treasure tables and such is fine as long as the default is explicitly called out for DMs who want transparency into exactly how much an item is expected to cost by default, or how tough a monster is intended to be. No randomness in character generation except...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog "Avoiding Choice Traps"

Indeed. All classes should progress equally in all pillars. I don't want some classes locked into being crappy at one or more pillars. I should be able to make a scholarly or diplomatic fighter and not have to sacrifice combat utility to get that.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog "Avoiding Choice Traps"

Combined super feats is clunky and awkward. What if I want the combat piece from one feat, but the social piece from another? Ugh, no thanks. Likewise, feats handling social, combat, and exploration all from one pool doesn't work either. I shouldn't have to sacrifice combat utility to be a...

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

I'll also add that having some sort of charge mechanic that requires you to accumulate some resource to unlock abilities, either by pressing on through multiple encounters, or through something you earn within combat itself (or both) is a much better way to combat the 15MAD. Most people...
