D&D 5E (2014) Stupid math stuff that vaguely pertains to 5e.

This exactly. Against an equal level opponent, all classes should always be able to hit with their primary attack method (which may differ from class to class) about 60-70% of the time. Then you use damage and HP to average out combat duration and fine tune balance. Keeping damage static and...

How would the math change if...?

Thanks for the shoutout! :) So here is my original post and concept. I'm actually thinking about designing an OGL game around the concept because I love it so much for a variety of reasons that I elaborated on in my original post. :)

L&L: Putting the Vance in Vancian

I don't see that at all from Monte's post. I think what we will see is a core where the "feat" based abilities are largely baked into the core classes as simplified pre-determined class features. For groups who play straight up core, you just accept whatever ability you get at each level. You...

L&L: Putting the Vance in Vancian

I love everything about this article. I really love the notion of playing a feat based caster that has several at-will combat and utility abilities that they upgrade via feat chain into more powerful versions. How cool would an at-will Tenser's disk be as alluded to in the article! :)...

    Identifying Magic Items

I can't give you anymore XP, but exactly right. :) I think people are confusing the initial lack of knowledge as to an item's properties with a sense of wonder. But its a cheap imitation 5-minute sense of wonder, soon dispelled by not only forcing the players to go through a tedious mini-game...

    Identifying Magic Items

The notion that item experimentation contributes to sense of wonder is dead wrong, IMO. Having to experiment with items is firmly rooted in the notion of magic as physics. Where you can determine an item's discrete properties through a pseudo-scientific process. I think this is actually the...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next weekly art column!

I want to see more vistas of nature, and a mixture of exotic and not so exotic landscapes, such a panoramic forest shot, or moss covered ruins hinting at ancient civilization. I'd prefer less straight on portraits like in the 4e PHB1, and more scenes that tell a story and hint of what happened...

    Morrus on... Races

This. I don't want racial penalties at all, and minor ability score bonuses. I don't want certain races to have such an overwhelming advantage when picking certain classes that its a no brainer to pick them. But racial abilities that aren't tied to ability scores can and should matter beyond...

Confirming crits, good idea, bad idea, or worst idea ever

Crit confirmation rolls are absolute garbage for numerous reasons I won't even get into since most people brought them up already. Now if we get the one they hinted at in the leaked playtest where you roll again for bonus damage, I could see that. But don't call it a confirmation roll. That...

    Opposed Rolls?

Opposed rolls all the way. You can always just take 10 if you don't want to roll, but I like rolling a lot. I always want to feel like I'm in control of what happens to my PC. Since the defender and the attacker roll at the same time its no slower than a single roll system. I played Palladium...

The New D&D Next Official Site

Morrus, the NCAA is the governing body that regulates college athletics in the US. College sports, particularly American football (not that other kind of football most of us Americans have little interest in :p ) is HUGE, commanding TV broadcast money that rivals or dwarfs some professional...

    Broken NDAs or Elaborate Trolls?

Considering that D&D is a game, I like the gamey and dissociated stuff if it helps me play the style I want. Thats why I'd rather have two (or more) healing systems and you can pick the one you want and ignore the other one. Some people don't want Warlords and thats cool. Some people like me...

    Broken NDAs or Elaborate Trolls?

Actually in 4e its not a crit unless the 20 would have resulted in a hit. If the only reason they hit at all was because of the 20 being an auto-hit then its not a crit. Much better than inventing a clunky extra roll that mostly just screws over players.

    Broken NDAs or Elaborate Trolls?

I can't believe that they have rolling for critical confirmation!!!!! Grrr!! Thats such a stupid rule. It was one of the first things we house ruled out of 3e and our Pathfinder games. Even the Pathfinder diehards in my group think its stupid. As far as healing goes, I'd rather have the...

    Retraining?

Let me be blunt, and I expect some controversy with this. No player should ever be forced to play a PC they are unsatisfied with. Now does that mean a player should have carte blanche to totally rebuild their PC whenever they feel like it? Of course not. But if trapping players into a bad...

    Retraining?

I keep seeing the same threads coming up again and again in this forum and people keep arguing the same points over and over again. Anyway, it should be a sidebar, not a specific rule, but generally speaking a player should be free to swap out any aspect of their character they have an issue...

What would you rather see: core rulebook or traditional trilogy?

For four editions we have had a PHB, DMG, and MM at release. I don't want boxed sets, I don't want a single book. I want the classic trilogy. And I want to feel like my money is buying something, I want each book to be about 300 pages of awesomeness with dense text. 4e books have too much...

    Legends and Lore for 2/13

Ugh, no. They might actually take that seriously. If you really want to flip people out, vote for gender based ability score maximums.

    Revisioning Tiers

I kind of like this but would prefer all the tiers to be renumbered starting with level 1, but with rules for how to carry a PC across tiers for campaigns that want to start off the farm but end up as gods. Then have each tier also provides it own character creation rules that starts you off...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too

I'm cool with that, but when DMing I like to roll too. :) I like the idea of opposed rolls. Having played an opposed roll d20 based system quite extensively before, I can attest that opposed roll d20 actually plays very fast, particularly because the attacker and the defender can roll at the...
