    This would be cool. :)

    Powers dropping out...

I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here. This mechanic could mean that you can swap lower level slots for higher level slots, not that you unlearn your spells or anything. I say more information is needed. :)

Seminar Transcript - Class Design: From Assassins to Wizards

Awesome! I'm very encouraged by everything I'm hearing. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5e going to be a fantasy heartbreaker?

Well if a broad definition of a fantasy heartbreaker is a game that is essentially a house ruled D&D, that tries to "fix" D&D, but falls short, and/or is doomed to irrelevance, then I would say neither 4e or PF would qualify. But for slightly different reasons. For one thing, while PF does fit...

    D&D 5E (2014) No ascending bonuses: A mathematical framework for 5e

Me too! :) It doesn't sound like they will be quite as strict with ascending bonuses as what I originally proposed but if they can keep them under control, and present a unified progression across all classes, I think it provides a solid and balanced framework for 5e that is amazingly...

    Relevant Orcs

Yep. Without knowing specifics, it sounded very similar to what I was suggesting with my treatise on getting rid of ascending bonuses that I posted in another thread. :) There are a lot of benefits to be had by keeping ascending bonuses in check, and this is one of them.

D&D 5E (2014) Drop the rotating spotlight model of niche protection for 5e

Based on some of the tweets coming out of DDXP, my impression is that WotC has siloed the game into 3 core areas for 5e: Combat, Social, Exploration. And you can specialize in each one to various degrees. They specifically mentioned a Fighter taking the "Noble" package to get more social...

New to D&D - Level x magic item?

There are also quite a few D&D clones that branched from the 3rd edition of D&D. Prior to the current edition, Wizards had a very generous open game license that allowed other publishers to essentially make their own independent games using their D&D rules. You may hear terms like OGL, or SRD...

New to D&D - Level x magic item?

The red box beginner's set is an introduction to the game but not super useful long term. The Heroes of The Fallen Lands and Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms books provide a much more in-depth explanation of how to create a character, how your abilities work, and so on. That information is...

    DDXP Begins Today!

TerraDave Without knowing anything about the mechanical implementation of what it will look like, and how close it will match what I envisioned in the other thread, logically it makes sense to de-emphasize ascending bonuses. It allows you build a world where your basic orc is still relevant...

    DDXP Begins Today!

Ooh, and Mearls and Cook talked about the Fighter having the "Noble" package to give them social skills! :) Its like they read my mind on some of this stuff when designing 5e. ;) And to be fair, a lot of other's players minds as well. :)

    DDXP Begins Today!

Heh, based on the tweets it sounds like ascending bonuses will be demphasized in favor of giving classes more interesting things to do. And the orc is relevant at more levels right out of the monster manual. Sounds exactly like my treatise on no ascending bonuses. :) Yeah baby! :)

D&D 5E (2014) Drop the rotating spotlight model of niche protection for 5e

I was reading a fascinating discussion on RPG.net about 5e and two points were made that really struck me as being particularly insightful. The first has to do with the deconstruction of the entire concept of niche protection in terms of the two core game elements that all RPGs have to deal...

    D&D 5E (2014) No ascending bonuses: A mathematical framework for 5e

Where have you heard that? So far, I don't think we know anything about how 5e will handle hitpoints. The L&L columns have hinted about skills and ability scores but thats about it. Honestly, I don't see how 5e damage and HP can be less than the 4e model, without going back to super fragile...

D&D XP News Blackout -- DEBUNKED

I heard something to the effect that the seminars will be open. Only the actual playtest will be NDAed. I wish WotC was more open about things, though. The lack of concrete information on 5e is frustrating. But I can understand given the huge freakouts that people had during 4e reveals. Though...

    Level of Play

What I WANT to play is ALL EPIC ALL THE TIME! :) What I am forced to play is usually levels 1-10. :( I'm so tired of low level D&D. I have played it for 25 years now. But all adventures assume you start at level 1 and cap out at around 10-15 or so. IMO, thats when the game finally gets...

D&D 4E New to 4e, not sure I like it.

Every table is different and every experience is different. I have consistently found PF slower than a comparable encounter run in 4e. That isn't always true depending on the party mix and levels, but I have found that it generally holds true for about levels 3-10. From level 1-3 PF tends to be...

D&D 4E New to 4e, not sure I like it.

I call total BS on that. If your players and DM know what they are doing, and are ready to go on their turn, I find that 4e combat is about 50% to 2x faster than PF combat and will go through nearly twice as many rounds in that time, meaning every player gets to go more often. I play 4e and...

    D&D 4E Pen and Paper 4e

I will use the DDI builder for one shots, but any PC I plan on using long term I always craft by hand using pencil and paper and the books laid out in front of me. Works just fine. When I played 4e last, only one DM ever used electronic tools. He used an encounter and initiative tracker...
