D&D Beyond Beta: Your First Thoughts Thread!

Sounds good enough, I suppose. Let me go check it- ... You know what, nevermind.

    D&D 5E (2014) Clerics and GFB/BB

Arcana Cleric (1st level) + Magic Initiate Druid (for Shillelagh more than anything else) will get you there. 1st level Arcana Cleric gives you two cantrips from the wizard's spell list (including GFB and BB), making both count as cleric cantrips (and would thus use wisdom for the casting...

    D&D 5E (2014) class mastery

Why not just take all (or multiple) subclasses simultaneously, then? A (admittedly cursory) look at the current subclasses suggests to me that taking more than one subclass at once would grant you more versatility, but not all that much more power (other than from the increased versatility)...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you feel 5e pressures you to build strong over fun?

Let's see... Just as there's plenty of imperfectly legit, imperfectly illegit, and perfectly illegit playstyles. Definitely an OnlyWay believer myself, said OnlyWay being "do what you like first, everything else second". Not so much a caller-outer, except when defending someone else...

D&D 5E (2014) good things, bad things and things you would change about 5e

No. It sounds like he's referring to a combination of expertise + reliable talent, where you end up with a rogue potentially having +15 to a given skill and the inability to ever end up with less than a 10 on the die.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sharpshooter

The first paragraph does not, in this case, override the bullet points. Now, moving away from what the rules say for a moment... In my opinion, that first paragraph is the effective cause for a given character being able to now do what the feats allows for in the bullet points. Which is to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sharpshooter

And I believe that organization serves a useful (and interesting) purpose. I disagree. They could have easily have made two entries for dagger, or any of the other thrown weapons, if they wanted to. It would have been wasteful, mind. They could have also easily made a third category for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sharpshooter

Unfortunately, that rule alone does not tell the whole story. Otherwise, going only off that, you could technically argue for Glaives, Halberds, Lances, Pikes, and Whips being ranged weapons due to the fact that they are able to attack a target at a distance. It would be a poor case to make...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sharpshooter

According to Sage Advice, they intentionally gave what they considered feats with narrow use (explicitly mentioning Great Weapon Master and Crossbow Expert) at least one benefit that could be applied more broadly. For Crossbow Expert, that would be the ability to make ranged attacks without...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sharpshooter

Short answer: Partially Longer answer: The first and second benefits apply to ranged weapon attacks and would therefore apply when you throw a melee weapon. The third benefit applies to ranged weapons, which melee weapons (even with the thrown property) are not.

Hulburg Trilogy - A Concern For Baldman....

Why would it be necessary, though? I mean, barring sharing names with terrible people being illegal now or something.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing

Just allow multiclassing with no restrictions other than the ones already in the book. If it really goes as bad as you fear it might, ban it or restrict it the next time using this time's failures as a reason.

    D&D 5E (2014) A simple questions for Power Gamers, Optimizers, and Min-Maxers.

Wait, face value equality? As in, equality in theory, but not in actual practice?

    D&D 5E (2014) A simple questions for Power Gamers, Optimizers, and Min-Maxers.

No. In fact, I'd go further and say I would not play (or would stop playing) any version of anything where all options are equally 'good'. No. The realization of the inability to build a better- or worse- character would kill- and has killed in other games- any motivation to continue...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crossbow

This is, strictly speaking, not entirely correct. Melee thrown weapons without the finesse property (Handaxe, Javelin, Light Hammer, Spear, Trident) use Strength. Melee thrown weapons with the finesse property (Dagger) use the player's choice of Strength or Dexterity, as specified in both the...

Volo's Guide AL Rules - You can play them all!

Personally, I'm highly disappointed in the direction taken with regard to the 'monstrous' races. Being able to play them all, but only if grew up in these specific ways and are part of these specific groups, makes me almost wish instead that they didn't allow you to play any of them without a...

D&D 5E (2014) How much do you value your Con score?

Constitution is usually a stat I tend to ignore, if not dump, as nothing I tend to care about (and no, I don't care about hit points) relates to it. Granted, I try not to have any stat below 10 (as far as point buy is concerned), but if any stat must, then Con is always among the choices.

D&D 5E (2014) Druid Wild Shape Beast Size

In both cases, the druid in Brown Bear shape is forced to squeeze into a single square. The rules for squeezing into a smaller space (page 192 of the Player's Handbook) appear to be the most appropriate for dealing with both situations.

Ravenloft Al modles Jasper questions and rants. Spoilers

Player in question reporting. One cannot forget that what one never knew. Yep; the last time I did anything Ravenloft was early July, and I definitely didn't see a Barexit option then. I haven't even touched either of the two characters in Ravenloft until recently, when I asked about joining.

D&D 5E (2014) Little rules changes that still trip you up

I'd allow the change of target, or even a change of action, in this and similar cases - even if I don't consider it strictly by the book.
