I hear you. Counterspelling in this edition has always been a bit clunky from my perspective. However, I have a current group of players who use it and like it a lot. I would be fine with just throwing the spell out completely, but again that would run counter to my players' expectations and wishes.

It can create a lot of tension at my gaming table - ymmv and all that. If you check out the finale of the CR you can see how counterspell can add something.

[ Has WOTC clarified whether these abilities can be counterspelled? I thought they were nerfing counterspell a bit with these abilities. IMC I am allowing the spell-like abilities to be countered, but I would be interested in the RAW or even RAI. Thanks.
