D&D General The first players—looking for experiences of those playing before 1976

I started D&D with 2e, and I suspect that @GreyLord is correct - you will not find many who can answer your question :(

D&D General The Not-Cleric Class for the Other Powers

I'll note that while it's not perfect, the domain system we have now do differentiate the clerics to a reasonable degree - you can make a priest of fire (light domain, blaster) quite distinct from a priest of the forge (forge domain, crafting and melee combat). But I agree that I wish it was a...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Is The Assassin Rpgue?

This is it - this is the fantasy, the dream, the moment the assassin player is chasing. It definitely is a big ropleplaying moment, and will be memorable. buuuuut... How often will this happen in a campaign? Sneak attacks are going to happen every fight - ideally, every attack. But the...

D&D 5E (2014) Bard exists, now make YOUR Bard. (+)

I do agree with the general sentiment though Bard should be half casters, but I would give them cantrips (a bit like artificers). And a bit like artificers or warlocks, they should have "bardic tricks" analogous to the invocations/infusions. A number of bard features already feel like those...

D&D 5E (2014) Bard exists, now make YOUR Bard. (+)

It really bothers me that the bard is a full caster. In a game of mine, one player wanted to play "a bard" - but I knew their understanding of the game was limited, so we had a discussion of what they wanted - they certainly didn't want a full caster... so they ended up playing an arcane...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

I still want to play some concepts in 5e! Like I really want to build the Frog knight character from Final fantasy(EDIT: Chrono Trigger), but not as a noble paladin who's been transformed into a frog humanoid, but as a grung with delusions of heroism - a hexblade/college of sword. His magic...

D&D 5E (2014) I need ideas of fun & creative things to do with Wizard spells

unseen servant is also excellent role play - it would make a lot of sense for wizards to have several "make my life easier" spells, and I'm happy to see a smattering of them in the game. Familiars, unseen servants, "lodging" spells...

D&D General The Not-Cleric Class for the Other Powers

On the topic of "small gods" - I really like "using" them in my world building as the source of certain "minor" source of magic. Magic initiate because you are the chosen "high priest" of a small family god? Makes a lot of sense to me!

D&D 5E (2014) I need ideas of fun & creative things to do with Wizard spells

When my wizard casts unseen servant as a ritual, he does a "montage" of what he wants the unseen servant to do ... it's almost as much work as what the unseen servant will be doing :D :D :D

D&D General Jaquaying the dungeon - a term to avoid

Thank you very much for this important update. I've edited my original post to reflect these developments.

D&D 5E (2014) I want my players to ignore class in character creation

and if you are going to do that... you might as well use another system that is much better geared for it.

D&D 5E (2014) Order Vs Twilight Cleric. Neo Warlord Abuse?

My experience with twilight cleric is limited to tier 2 - I ran a short campaign, a 2e adventure Dungeon Magazine I converted to 5e and I had run previously (both in 2e and 5e), called "My lady's mirror". (I recommend it, the map is great and it has great NPCs/foes). The party consisted of a...

D&D 5E (2014) I want my players to ignore class in character creation

It does, because there are some questions you can't really ask as plausibly. At level 3, you could ask "describe your first adventure" - how did the PC reach this relative level of power? But at level 1, their adventures are in front of them, not behind. I'll also note that some people like...

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

We played a campaign that ended at level 8-9 with an artillerist and he never used the temp hp bot - perhaps the group felt a bit ... sheepish... after the twilight cleric OP madness of the previous adventure. Instead the character was played as a blaster (in a party with 2 tanks and 2 other...

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

Dungeons of Drakkenheim is a great adventure. The location is somewhat open, but not overly so (90% of the adventuring happens within one city devastated by a magical meteor) There are many great NPCs who are fully fleshed out with conflicting motivations BUT - there is no one great villain...

D&D 5E (2014) I want my players to ignore class in character creation

I like this in principle, but it has a danger: Some new players are extremely creative, and some may come up with ideas that well, can't be done well in D&D... but I think it's still worth trying to do what you are doing. What level would they be starting at?

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

Ooooof I'm asking a silly question, but it's been a bit - can you confirm we are now in the "new" portions of the module? Or has this always been a flaw in the adventure? thanks again for posting! I'll note in passing that a "some PCs captured" is indeed a good "moment" for a player to...

    D&D 5E (2014) High DPR Paladin-Rogue-Bard Will it work?

That is only one possible interpretation - as you say, "paladin slots" just doesn't work with multiclassing (non warlock) spell slot because the 2 pools are combined. BUT I find it's quite a leap to conclude from this that the designers decided "ok, so the paladin can use spell slots they get...
