    D&D 5E (2014) High DPR Paladin-Rogue-Bard Will it work?

I think the rules are clear if you look at how they are written in more than one case. We have eldritch smite, which specifies "you can expend a warlock spell slot" The paladin smite is just "you can expend one spell slot" So it is preeeety clear that the intent here is that warlock...

    D&D 5E (2014) High DPR Paladin-Rogue-Bard Will it work?

Are you sure about that? "The Warlock table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your warlock spells of 1st through 5th level." sounds like a warlock has spell slots. Just because pact magic doesn't "mesh" with other spellcasting slots for multiclass purposes doesn't mean they aren't...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

In my experience, a lot of those videos recommend the human variant for the free feat... there is a fascinating video about the interaction between optimizing and gaming culture - it's about WoW, not D&D, but there are a lot of parallels.

    D&D General Ranger Tank Armor

I once played a party tank as a ranger, using a sword and shield fighting style. It was... not great, but it worked decently. I think let them play what they want and see how it works out. Perhaps they can pick a warrior sidekick if they feel they need a tank but don't want to switch PCs...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

But this is a huge party - the "default" is 4 members... it's effectively a double party. Both on the importance of casters and numbers... in our Drakkenheim game (the one with 3 full casters, a half caster and a soul knife) we were in a fight vs 3 NPCs. We hit them with an overlapping...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

Ok, if you are the only person at the table with prior TTRPG experience, why on earth would you ask a newbie DM to run 3PP? Sticking to the PHB, DMG and MM is probably a wise move for a new DM with no TTRPG experience. When I ran my first 5e campaign I had no feats and no multiclass. And I...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

We were a level 2 party, not level one, but we destroyed a CR3 creature (a manticore). I know level 1 to 2 is a power jump, but I too feel a CR3 creature for level 1 is not that bad. Besides, violence is just one of many solutions. And if you are being clever, diplomatic, your level isn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

My Drakkeheim game (where I'm a player, not the one where I am a DM) had a cleric, a wizard, an apothercary (sort of a full caster), a ranger and a soul knife rogue (not a caster, but very useful). The amount of shenanigans we can pull is astonishing. We once infiltrated a place via my...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reevaluating Mage Slayer feat

ha - a bit like that Troika! class I mentioned -useful vs caster but also useful in general

    D&D 5E (2014) Reevaluating Mage Slayer feat

I agree that the main issue with the feat is that it's very situational, and can go from extremely useful in one campaign to next to useless in another. I don't have a good "fix", but I do note that in Troika!, there is a "class" called the wizard hunter. The wizard hunter has skills/features...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

Huh! If you had said "no magic!" perhaps but.. I've yet to experience a player who will only play full casters. It seems like the perfect opportunity to try something odd, like a caster/caster multiclass. I looked at my post again, and I removed players who have only played in one campaign...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

every game ... wow. That is not my experience, at all. There, at times, has been considerations like "we need a tank" or "do we have anyone that can sneak/heal/etc", but not a specific class... Back in the 2e days when we were teens, that did happen more often. But with modern rules and...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

I would suggest you play Exalted then, where the PCs are exalts and not mere mortals. They can do those kind of astounding martial feats you seem to want to see. D&D is great. But it's not the only system, and it's not the best system for some kinds of gaming.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

I've enjoyed playing fighters in 5e, and I suspect I would enjoy a cleric too (although I haven't had the chance). I would note however that the cleric is perhaps not for everyone, but in 5e is it a fun and powerful class. In older editions... it wasn't so great.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

DATA! Good idea. My 5e campaigns (excluding PBP) PCs. If a "non caster" class has some magic (subclass, feats etc) I will note it. I won't include a few "bounces" - players that didn't stick around long for various reasons, but I will count those who were part for a few levels. As a DM...

D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

I thought this was going to be about a different aspect of hitpoints - natural healing. If memory serves, natural healing in previous editions was painfully slow - one-2 hp/day kinda thing. In 3.X, (again, if memory serves), natural healing was 1 hp/level (all these numbers could be altered...

Did the Ads Recently Change on this Site (New Pop Ups)

I came here to say the same - the add are "in the way" of the typing window. I 100% understand that ads are needed to keep websites alive, but this is too much.

D&D General Jaquaying the dungeon - a term to avoid

That's... a bit thin. I was vaguely thinking about buying the book, but ... nah.

Well my opinion of the man took a hit. Jaquaysing it will be for me.
