    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

The dragonborn in the phb is definitely mechanically underwhelming. I remember seeing the race for the very first time, telling myself "omg this is going to be a powergamer's dream!" kept reading and went... huh. I have seen very few in my games, if any. Perhaps one or two one-shot types...

D&D General The most played D&D Adventure of all time

I've played in Ravenloft a ton in my teens. We had a large group, and 3 main GMs. One of them was a huge fan of the setting, I wasn't really that into it - I couldn't get out of the "traditional D&D mindset" and really engage in the setting. We must have done at least half a dozen adventures...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dissonant Whispers + Warcaster + Booming Blade AOO mechanics

Yes! I see this unstable sheath of energy as "sticking" to the person, when they are tossed around by a force effect or shoved by a giant, or standing on a moving ship for that manner. If they move on their own power, kapow! That being said... It's my ruling, it's one others may like too, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dissonant Whispers + Warcaster + Booming Blade AOO mechanics

But what does willing mean? What if you are coerced to move? If you are mugged, did you "willingly" hand over your wallet? Another example: If you run from a terrible monster, how does the spell know if A: There was a terrible monster B: There was an illusion of a terrible monster C...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dissonant Whispers + Warcaster + Booming Blade AOO mechanics

So this is how I rule it: The spell is not "intelligent". The spell cares if the target moves on their own. The spell doesn't know if the target moving is enthusiastic about the move, reluctant... if the target runs away because there is an angry giant and the target is afraid of the giant...

D&D General How long should an after work online gaming session be ideally?

For several years now, my pattern has been 3 hour sessions, 7-10 pm, 6 sessions a month. (edit: on weekdays). Two of these are face to face (a game I run) and the other 4 are online (a game I'm in). In the online game, we have players from California to Newfoundland, so this game is 4-7 for...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Releases 2023 Character Creation Data

They used a log scale? That's hilarious :D Anyway, I wonder... how do they know if it's a test character, vs something actually played? For example. On my D&D beyond account, I have 28 created characters. But only 7 of them have been in campaigns, and another 7 were used for one-shots and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are Paladins Merely Mediocre Multiclass Fighter/Clerics?

    D&D 5E (2014) Are Paladins Merely Mediocre Multiclass Fighter/Clerics?

If spell casting is important to you, play a full caster. However, the Paladin is often seen as one of the best classes in 5e. Their capacity to nova damage (vai smite) and protect the party (via saving throw boost) is quite significant.

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

Dueling style is needed to be as strong as it is to make the sword and shield style viable IMO.

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

In my games, I allow characters to chuck thrown weapon without too much consideration of the weapon hands, so the thrown weapon fighting style is never taken. If someone wanted to have a specialist in that style (a knife throwing master)... I would make the style give a bonus to both range and...

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

My math for it was +0.83 dmg per attack, but now I want to re-check. 1d6 average, instead of being (1+2+3+4+5+6)/6, becomes (3.5+2+3+4+5+6)/6 (the 1 is rerolled for a d6, which has an average of 3.5). So 3.916666. Do - 3.5, x2 for the 2d6 of a greatsword and... yeah, not good. It's...

D&D General Does a multiclassed fighter still get the Action Surge Boost at level 17?

I'll also note that increased cantrip damage is a part of the spell, not a class feature, another evidence that "increasing with character level" is the exception, not the general rule.
