    D&D 5E (2014) What should a hangover do in 5e?

I was assuming RangerWickett was working on some "in-depth" drinking rules. That or building a new wild magic table.

    D&D 5E (2014) What should a hangover do in 5e?

I dunno, I think a failure to sleep for a full night is probably equal in "penalty" to being severely hung-over. And being hung over is curable and doesn't last all day.

    D&D 5E (2014) Strahd Visitations

I haven't been as prone to visitations as the others on this site - it doesn't seem appropriate for what my PCs do, and I don't want to make him a "DM's Pet" villain. I did have him show up at the end when the party was desperately stopping the ritual at Yester Hill - but they succeeded, so he...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items, and what it says about the editions

My players feel the loss of random magical treasure in 5e. So for my next campaign I'm designing the world around magic treasure - and the PCs will discover a mysterious book that acts as their shopping list - this magic item is in this dungeon here. (It's more complicated than that, of...

D&D 5E (2014) where you're going to die in CoS (spoilers)

Not to mention the master of the castle himself. I hope someone's on watch - if not, were I the DM, that Sunsword would be missing at daybreak...

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd for Dummies (confessions of a DM new to the idea of 'sandbox' blecch!!)

My party - which traditionally hasn't done sandboxes - discovered suddenly just how much weird stuff is just "there" in Vallaki. They just decided to poke around the burgomaster's mansion while he was out (they were looking for Victor) and found the guy in the closet, and the room full of...

D&D 5E (2014) I need to increase my strength with a wish, what should i say?

My players never worried about having a wish twisted because they were more worried about saving the wish for a real campaign-ender of an emergency.

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd and Paladin's Divine Sense

My party used detect evil on the first stranger they met on the road. (Mind you, he looked kind of creepy.) This resulted in the rogue attacking him from behind while the rest of the group was talking to him. Not that it worked. My hand to god, I rolled the highest possible option on the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Your favorite campaign you've never run

After reading about MtG's Alara block, I devised a campaign around four elemental demi-planes, each of which was a world that had developed with one basic element absent. Life evolved there anyway - usually replacing the missing element with some native weirdness. The dominant races on each...

D&D 5E (2014) Standard security features of a permanent Teleportation Circle

I wouldn't allow a player to say "I get to pick the sigil I know, so I pick the master villain's secret base circle". The DM should provide them with the code for a circle useful to the mage in the context of the game - presumably the one in their home town.

    D&D 5E (2014) Can a fireball melt ice?

How much damage did you roll? How thick is the ice?

D&D 5E (2014) CoS: Full of child peril and death, but lacking...

If we want a source of potential sex-appeal and Strahd-apologists, I'd say Lady Wachtenburg (sp?)'s book club would have the most potential with a little rewrite.

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd: Determining your Ally

OK - finally got the Tarokka reading done for my players' party. The ally they rolled is Victor Vallakovich (handy because they don't have a wizard). He's the eccentric son of the burgomaster of Vallaki. Any suggestions for tying his story more directly to the plot are welcome.

    D&D 5E (2014) CoS - Quick question on fortunes

I'm making up quest cards anyway, so I'm going to have cards for each of the individual fortune items. Interpreting Eva's words is up to the party, of course.

D&D 5E (2014) [Question] Medusa and Sight Based Spells (Magic Missile, Blight, etc.)

I'm not the best expert, but that's certainly how I ruled. You can't attack "blindly" with a spell that requires sight targeting.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it houseruling to let a torch set fire to things?

I think, when making rulings, there is a difference between "can I set fire to something with a torch" and "I use my attack action to hit the orc with a torch, so he should have to make a Dex save or catch fire." Circumstances matter.

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd: Determining your Ally

I was GOING to find out what my party's Tarokka reading was yesterday, but one of my players was sick. Hmph.

D&D 5E (2014) Looking for unique suggestions on making player resurrections punishing.

I came up with the idea of having each player (that wants to anyway) come up with a story idea of "fate worse than death". Something horrible that you're allowed to do to them if they die instead of killing their character. Permanent maiming, abduction by a monster, weird curses, whatever...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Curse of Strahd" (and DDAL adventures)

I just want to say that this is the first time I've been able to discuss a new module with other DMs as we're all running it, and it's been a thought-provoking blast.

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounters for Level 11+ Characters

A group of fomorians rather intimidated my group when they were 11+.
