    D&D 5E (2014) What does 5E NEED

What 5e needs is a race that gives +2 Wis. ;) As it is, 5e doesn't need anything, as it has all the guidelines you'd need to create things which you think you need. That being said, rules for creating scrolls and potions would be nice, as well as clarification on the rules for hiding. While I...

    D&D 5E (2014) LMoP Villian

I made The Black Spider a 7th-level Eldritch Knight with magic armour and weapons (which naturally lose their enhancement bonuses when exposed to sunlight). Bending the rules a tad to give him Blur, and he'll be sitting pretty at 21 AC, 4 potential Shield spells, and attacks against him will...

    D&D 5E (2014) Potent Cantrip replacement

What's wrong with it? It gives you guaranteed damage, provided the target isn't immune to your cantrip. Just use cantrips that require saving throws rather than attack rolls and you're golden! If you're fighting enemy wizards, forcing a concentration check without having to use a spell slot...

    D&D 5E (2014) Necromancers in 5E

Ah, I'd thought that Inspiring Leader could only be used during a short or long rest (like the bard's Song of Rest, but giving temp HP rather than increasing the healing from Hit Dice). If it only takes 10 minutes and can be used without resting, it's a lot more powerful than I'd initially thought.

    D&D 5E (2014) Necromancers in 5E

Doesn't Inspiring Leader have a limited number of targets it can grant its temp HP to? I'm AFB right now but I seem to recall it having a limiting factor (more than only affecting creatures in earshot). If you can't give all your skeletons temp HP, it may be better to shore up your party using...

    D&D 5E (2014) Druid Wild Shape Help

    1. The total hit points are 34. The value in parentheses (4d10+12) is there for DMs who want to roll the HP (which isn't the standard), as well as to provide internal consistency for how the monster's HP are calculated. 2. The (hit) part is what happens when you hit an enemy with that attack...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rewards of the Factions

IMO faction benefits should be more RP based than power based. Joining a faction makes other members of that faction automatically friendly, making things like safe haven or small favours easier to come by. If you get a mentor, then you have a patron who can be a source of adventures and...

D&D 5E (2014) So I think the Designers get the "Alertness" feat wrong and made it OP

If you think Alert is broken, you'll simply love the Weapon of Warning...

D&D 5E (2014) What awesome thing happened in your game recently?

I'm running my party through LMoP (albeit with a lot of changes), and when my party got to Cragmaw Castle they saw it was perched on top of a cliff with three ways in: Up a stone bridge which was 200 feet of open terrain (with a barricade 2/3 of the way along to make things even more difficult)...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell combos under Concentration economy

If you feel like not dying, a combination of Mage Armor, Blur and Shield is evil. Until your first-level spell slots (or spell points) run out, attack rolls against you have disadvantage, and you essentially have 18 + Dex AC. And a little higher level... But if you're an Eldritch Knight of...

D&D 5E (2014) Dex to AC when unconscious?

I'm not debating that having Dex added to AC doesn't make sense if a creature relies on moving and dodging to avoid damage... But even against a defenseless target, your examples which I quoted could apply. The attack could hit, but not break through the armour; if the target's wearing light or...

D&D 5E (2014) Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

Read the "Ammunition" property. "A ranged weapon [used] to make a melee attack" is a generalization that works in every case except for nets and darts, which is why they put it there... If you want a really detailed explanation of every relevant rule, read post 35. Or you can save yourself the...

D&D 5E (2014) Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

Read up-thread for the detailed reason why. Short form: only weapons with the "Ammunition" property used to make melee attacks are considered improvised weapons. There are no rules stating that darts and nets can't be used to make melee attacks at full effectiveness.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you domesticate a wild animal?

I think that it would work best if he found it himself and trained it in his downtime: spending 200 days and 200gp to train the animal (like learning a new tool) seems like a fair investment while avoiding stepping on the toes of the Beastmaster. Maybe reduce the time to 50 or 100 days so that...

D&D 5E (2014) How often do you play?

I DM on R20 once a week, and play a campaign whenever the DM can wrangle together our group (maybe 3 times in 2 months). Sessions for both groups tend to be between 4 and 6 hours long.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e with Young Kids

You could have them undergo a voyage similar to that of Odysseus. Greek mythology is full of great adventure ideas, and IMO the two most suitable ones are the stories of Polyphemus and that of Scylla and Charybdis. Say they don't have enough supplies to make the whole journey, and before they...

D&D 5E (2014) I thought that I had seen a Range limit to the sneak attack with the Ranged Weapon, 30 feet

It is, but if strict adherence to RAW is considered "right", then Mearls (who, iirc, isn't the "official" rules guy) and you are wrong. For a comprehensive look at the rules pertaining to ranged and melee weapons and weapon attacks, read on (and yes, I'm shamelessly ripping myself off from the...

D&D 5E (2014) How might you fix the beastmaster's animal companion?

In my game I toyed with the idea of the beast master commanding their animal to attack using an action, at which point it continues attacking until the Ranger commands it to stop (with another action), or every foe is dead. However, having two attacks per turn at level 3 was a lot more powerful...
