D&D 5E (2014) Grumbling about New (and Announced) Releases

I am surprised the Dragon book took this long to come out. It is a popular book in every edition and half the name of the game. I definitely don't need it, but it may have ideas to mine for other BBEGs. Strixhaven has too much that I want to strip mine for campaigns. I am genuinely intrigued to...

D&D 5E (2014) What is your least favorite class in 5E?

Ranger. It is a class without a purpose. A warrior who tracks? A mystic woodsman? Buff Pokemon trainer? Ranger is a subclass to better base classes. The Spell-less Ranger is a fighter with an appropriate outdoorsy background. I am at a loss how a ranger is its own class anymore, other than...

    D&D 5E (2014) In a Prehistoric Setting, a fighter's bone axe shatters. A Wizard's _____ breaks how?

A prehistoric wizard might, instead of memorizing spell formulas, build small satchels or effigies with spell components that are crushed or untied or undone in some way while saying a word of power. Wizards already have a built-in mechanic for 'weapon breakage', they have spell components...

D&D 5E (2014) Speculation Thread: the "Wonderful, Scary, Terrifying" book being announced this month

Maybe a sourcebook/adventure set in the plane-spanning Illithid Empire before the Gith uprising? Or perhaps set in the Court of the Githyanki Lich Queen Vlaakith. An Empire of the Spider Throne adventure during the rule of Vecna and Kas would be fun as well.

    D&D 5E (2024) "The Future of D&D" (New Core Books in 2024!)

I know that my desire for a new psionics subsystem is a pipe dream with the conservative design the WotC currently pursues. I still do not see many of the other components necessary for Dark Sun to be one of the settings except maybe the 2023 one. You still need defiling/preserving playtested...

D&D 5E (2014) Zooming In On Monsters of the Multiverse [UPDATED!]

This info is a mixed bag for me. I like the return to 4e monster layout. Having combat spells as actions, spelled out in the stat block, is a nice thing for running the game, especially as a newer player who may not have exposure to all the spells. I dislike renaming actions away from the spell...

    D&D 5E (2024) "The Future of D&D" (New Core Books in 2024!)

There is a lot more they can do with 5e. The base game is sound, but the D&D Next playtest showed how much more there can be done within bounded accuracy. The Dials and Knobs have been installed so far with child-proof tampering. Time to release the helicopter development style. If they start...

    D&D 5E (2024) "The Future of D&D" (New Core Books in 2024!)

I think it will still be 5E rules but streamlined with the new racial rules and revised guides for Dungeon Maters like in Wild Beyond the Witch Light. They may incorporate some of the subclasses from the splats, but no real rules overhauls.

    D&D General D&D doesn't need Evil

This thread didn't have much of a rail to begin with, so it is not surprising it has wandered off into the weeds a bit. Evil is not necessary to run a D&D campaign, but neither is combat or magic. The majority of campaigns are going to have them though. Alignment has been used as a...

    D&D General D&D doesn't need Evil

Does D&D need Evil? No. You can happily play with complex morals and shades of grey. I think D&D can benefit from having Evil in play. A group of Harengon bandits can be brutal and cruel, without giving the Paladin a headache from the existential corruption and taint of their souls in the world...

D&D General The Role and Purpose of Evil Gods

The blending of Lucifer, the Devil, and Satan the Adversary in Christianity is complex, millennia of myth and religion absorbing other cultures and reacting to the march of time. The Satan of the Book of Job is different from the snake in Genesis is different from the Devil's temptation of Jesus...

D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie: Action Packed, Funny as Hell

Definitely. There were plenty of terrible fantasy movies after 2001, Eragon, The Seventh Son, Prince of Persia... The expectation that fantasy movies were a niche market was broken. Fantasy was no longer Sci Fis little annoying brother. The interesting thing about Peter Jackson being given The...

D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie: Action Packed, Funny as Hell

The weird thing about the D&D movie is that it existed right before Fantasy movies became big box office. Within a year of its release, both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises would be launched.

D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie: Action Packed, Funny as Hell

The writers can write. Game Night is a good movie. I worry when actors stress how funny a movie is. Either they are covering up for the rest of the movie sucking, or they perceive that the movie subject is too strange for audiences. Given that Smith was in Detective Pikachu, I am not sure he...

D&D General Poll: What module do you want to see Goodman Games tackle next for Original Adventures Reincarnated?

D1, D2, or Q1 are an easy choice. So obviously we can not choose them. Lost Cavern of Tsojcanth is a great module that would benefit from the in-depth treatment Goodman Games gives. The Slaver series is problematic not for the Slavery, but because there is an omnibus edition already out by WotC...
