WotC WotC's Chris Perkins On D&D's Inclusivity Processes Going Forward

Wow. So that happened. I think having another set of eyes look for blindspots in pre-published material is a good thing. Editors are good. Copy Editors are good too. These are people divorced from the production of the material and can focus on things that the designers and developers juggle...

WotC WotC's Chris Perkins On D&D's Inclusivity Processes Going Forward

Here is the thing, you don't get to tell other people to be okay with something they find upsetting. You often do not get a chance to offer your weak apologia for tone-deaf art and fluff. A person picking up Spelljammer and seeing minstrel art repurposed for a monkey race and then a white...

D&D 5E (2024) It goes to show you can't please everbody!

Armor Class is such an abstraction, I don't see what additional armors bring to the table. If we changed from armor granting AC bonus to a DR system, I could see more granularity, but mostly more armor would be fluff rather than mechanic.

WotC WotC's Chris Perkins On D&D's Inclusivity Processes Going Forward

This is good. It should have been best practice after the Curse of Strahd revisions, but it will make for better content going forward so definitely not too late. The Spelljammer 5E mistakes were just so glaring especially when the previous release was Radiant Citadel. I imagine it was humbling...

Wow. That is gorgeous. I feel transported back in time almost 40 years... Thank you, Stormonu for sharing!

Krynn Returns: A Preview of Dragonlance

DL:WoK seems like an odd duck for a board game. There is limited replay value if they are counting on people not opening card packs until they come up in-game. The premise doesn't sound very different from Battle Interactives in the old Living series of RPGA campaigns. I don't know that there is...

D&D General What’s The Big Deal About Psionics?

Hmm, 60 page thread on psionics I somehow missed. Sorry. I will just give the Cliff Notes version of why I want psionics. Vancian Spellcasting sucks. I hate it. It doesn't even represent its namesake in fiction. I want a magic system that has its power come from the caster, not the 'weave' A...

RPG Evolution: Boo! Pity the Ambush Monster

The point of having an ambush monster is to provide the PCs with a different type of encounter. The loss of player agency in a kidnapping is the crux of the problem. Typically, you wind up having a solo encounter until the rest of the party can get to the ambushed PC or you have a running battle...

WotC Dragonlance: Everything You Need For Shadow of the Dragon Queen

Well, of course, the adventure has to be able to run without the board game and vice versa. You can just use narrative defaults instead of the outcome of the board game. Some people use Theater of the Mind for combat, some use a battlemat, and some skip combat altogether. The trick is the 6...

WotC Dragonlance: Everything You Need For Shadow of the Dragon Queen

As someone who liked the stories set in Krynn in novels and short stories, but hated playing in Krynn in the modules, I am intrigued with a mild reboot. I also want to see how the board game mass combat and adventure interconnect, as that could be an interesting path forward for new settings.

D&D 5E (2024) Quick Question: Beyond and One

At best, I could see a discount on the 2024 versions. I, too, do not see anything but full price regardless of prior purchase.

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

First off: Baggins, James Baggins. James Bond is a halfling with the Lucky feat is hilarious. Second, what are we discussing anymore? The sacred cows are all enshrined now. There will be no holy bbq in the One D&D playtest. Spells are the default resolution mechanic for anything beyond a simple...

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

The problem with 5E is that the baseline is magic. Animal Friendship is the default for resolving befriending animals instead of an Animal Handling skill check. Mundane mimics the magical instead of spells supplanting skills. It is fundamental to 5E. Changing that paradigm is beyond the scope of...

D&D 5E (2014) Would making powerful enemies immune to cantrips make the game more or less fun?

This is an interesting tack to take. What if you required certain foci to cast spells at the creature? You need the Book of Ashanti to cast spells/cantrips at Demon Lord Zrag'gt. Pennythimble, Marquis of the Unseelie Court requires a cold iron wand to break his spell immunity. This makes the...

D&D 5E (2014) Where are the heirs to the 32 page adventure format?

So your group wants 'all killa, no filla'? Like an Action RPG? That is a different ask than a 32-page adventure. Fill the 60% empty halls with random mooks, echoing other monsters in the dungeon. Vary the CR from laughable to challenging. Should keep the group hopping without making you burn out.

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

I get wanting lower magic settings/style after playing for a long time. Part of the wonder missing from magic is umpteen campaigns of having spells slung around by PCs and monsters. Even a campaign with rare spellcasters and wondrous items will seem less magical simply from a 'been there, done...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next playtest post mortem by Mike Mearls and Rodney Thompson. From seven years ago.

This thread has taken a serious tangent... Charisma, Wisdom, or Intelligence fighters. We have subclasses that accomplish this with some hefty caveats, Hexblade being the most notable for Charisma. So it already can be done in 5E, but typically it is to allow a spellcaster to be at least...

D&D General Do I Have To Have Players?

I understand the feeling. Not the wrecking part per se, essentially a campaign is like a big dominoes setup; it is meant to be knocked down. The feeling I get before a campaign starts is more like the parent of a toddler, I am constantly checking and safety proofing everything that could go...

D&D General Vecna and Kas and the Book of Vile Darkness. WotC lore you should know.

Acererak is exactly my concern for using Vecna. ToA is a decent adventure, cultural issues aside, but Acererak is a generic villain. Why not use the actual history and setting available villains? Save Vecna for Planescape or gasp Greyhawk. Do not turn him generic. Equally, if they did use Szass...
