What a mess. What a wondrous, glorious, serendipitous mess. :) To be honest, templates were one of the lures that brought me from 1e to 3e. You ought to have seen all of the half-creatures in my first two online games. Alu-demons and cambions weren't enough so I added alu-everything else, etc...
I read the first 3 pages and last 3 pages of the thread. Apologies if I missed something golden in pages 4-9.
Absolutely! My current campaign is set beneath the surface of the sea. As you might expect, core races are not permitted. PCs must have a natural swim speed and the ability to...
Storyteller: 92%, Method Actor: 75%, Specialist: 67%, Tactician: 58%, Power Gamer: 33%, Butt-Kicker: 17%, Casual Gamer: 8%
But, to be fair, that described my DM style, as it has been decades since I was on the other side of a DM's Screen.
Agreed, though I would add:
4) 3D models for each race, class, and gender should be available for purchase for DAZ Studio, a free 3D modeling application. 3D models could them be exported in a format compatible with 3D printers.
What's not to understand? I downplay combat in my games, because I find the prevalence of numbers and die rolls interferes with my "willing suspension of disbelief". I prefer role-play heavy and combat light, with an emphasis on story over stats.
Having played D&D since 1979, I am still just...
If the books were combined, then we're talking over $90 (Anyone else remember when the 1e DMG was $15?). Hardly appealing to a first-time or casual gamer. If each was separately available as a $14.99 iBooks/ePub download, however, that might entice a few newcomers.
I always thought the older designations, "meat shield", etc., were mainly jokes, not game mechanics. Granted, I have never considered any of my characters to have "combat roles".
I remember in my first online game when the PCs not only discovered that flumphs, called uphlum by the locals, were related to both mind flayers and aboleth but also there were five subspecies of flumphs and a massive flumph goddess known as the Great Illuminator.
As the DM, the NPCs are my characters. I want them to be special too.
With my current campaign, I started by designing the BBEG. Then I fleshed out a few of her followers, the followers' minions, the minions' underlings, etc. When the campaign began, the PCs encountered the underlings. At Level...

Whichever option will present the game to new players and returning players alike, with a minimum investment. If that means 3 books, I'd opt for that. If it means two or three eBooks at a reduced price, all the better.
Different strokes, etc etc... If someone want to run a traditional dungeon crawl with kobolds and goblins or an urban campaign in a hamlet or thorp, they should be ready with little to no preparation. If someone wants to run an environmental campaign (desert, forest, naval/underwater, arctic)...
Feel free to tote your six-guns, but my campaign setting of choice is the World of Greyhawk, where gunpowder "doesn't work". Mind you, I would not stop a PC from blowing themselves up trying to invent the stuff.
Fair enough. I have not run a pre-packaged module/adventure path since the 80s. I doubt 5e would have a better chance than 4e, of writing one that interests me. Making stuff up is half the fun!
My last game switched from 1e to 3e in the middle of the campaign. I remain hopeful that 5e will...
