D&D 5E (2014) Polls in Wizards Community D&D Next Blogs

Agreed. I voted for fluff but agree with both sides of the equation, so we balanced out the poll. Flavor stands independent of mechanics. Flavor should be backed up by game rules. Both. I like boatloads of fluff. "Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide" is as useful as any Monster Manual, in this...

Who else hates seeing enemies Raised / Resurrected / Wished Back?

c'mon... Have you never seen Friday the 13th or Halloween? Have you never read a Marvel comic book? Bad guys NEVER stay dead for long. ;) I admit to a personal bias, however. This was the inspiration for my current campaign: I recycled antagonists from my last game, to make the BBEG in...

D&D 5E (2014) What happens if 5E fails to unite the base?

It would be interesting to look at past statistics of gamers who did or did not switch to newer editions shortly after the release of the newer edition. I'm betting that as each new edition is released, fewer players of past editions adopt the new ruleset. I would also speculate that with each...

    Musical RPG

I recall, many moons ago when I was a teen, spending a rainy afternoon with my best friend, his younger brother, and a tape recorder. Based upon a restaurant marquee with a missing letter, we performed an impromptu musical based loosely on a D&D adventure: "Sala Bar the Invincible" ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of D&D would you like 5E to resemble most? (poll version)

There are those who would disagree that 1e and 2e are the same game. ;) As for 5e, I say keep the core concepts but make it something new, equally befuddling to players of all prior editions. That way there would be no "Ha! 5e is more like 4e! I win!" or "What? 5e isn't like 3e? Waaah!". Unite...

    Let's Forget the Forgotten Realms

Oerth as the default campaign world once again? Yes, please. In fact I would take a three-tiered approach. As was done with 3e, the proper names for the World of Greyhawk should flavor spells, deities, and the like. The World of Greyhawk begins as the "assumed" default setting. Then I would...

    1000 page PHB

It looks like we needs both. In addition to a somewhat sizable PH, DMG, and MM, I suggest that the basics of the game should be extracted into two booklets: "Dungeons & Dragons: Quick-Start Rules" The DM's booklet would detail the basics of the game, have a few monsters, and present a sample...

Ostracized to the Basement (Birth of the Man-Cave)

Apparently, I will be moving my tanks to a large unfinished side of my basement before Spring. The finished portion of the basement has been claimed by my wife, for use as a photo studio. Here's a quick diagram: My tanks are a 240g (96"x24"), 155g (72"x24"), 72g (48"x18"), cylindrical 70g...

    Musical RPG

As I mentioned OVER HERE , I'd like to see a class that was all about the music. I still remember games like Loom: Video and Aquaria: Video Music as magic... It...Could.... WORK!!

What was the reason for the Demon/Devil split?

Don't forget about the daemons and demodands, to further muddy the mix. In my 1e game I even added daimons, incorporeal creatures responsible for "demonic possession". I always envisioned my elven characters as Pini elves:

    1000 page PHB

The game needs to be playable in 20 minutes or less. A PH the size of a phonebook (sorry, kids, look it up on wiki) would make this prospect difficult. As for the format, hardback for the luddites and iBooks (ePub) for the rest.

"Lost Girl" on SyFy. Anybody seen this show about a succubus?

I saw the pilot and wasn't all that impressed. It had a sort of "Grimm" feel to it; fairly two-dimensional and the writer felt the need to explain everything, leaving nothing for the viewer to wonder about.

Where to put Odd Spell-Casters: Bard, Witch, etc?

With a focus on simplicity and modularity, I doubt we'll see the bard in the 5e Players Handbook (unless of course the bard reverts to 1e and becomes a fighter/thief/bard(druid) ). That being said, I've always wanted to see a bard variant that was focussed entirely on the magics of music. A...

How much has world-creation been important to you?

Having just visited deepseanews.com, I read this at first as "invertebrate". ;) Absolutely. Discovery/BBC's "Blue Planet" series, coupled with books like OCEAN , and websites like deepseanews, underwatertimes, and Monterey Bay Aquarium's excellent webcams have been more valuable than gaming...

Core Classes: What and how many

This. I'm hoping one can "dial down" the complexity dials to eliminate the Leader/Striker/Defender/Controller roles.

How much has world-creation been important to you?

Agreed. I mentioned something similar Over Here . While I tend to use the World of Greyhawk as a campaign setting, I set my adventures in out of the way locales. Since 1998, my games have been set underwater, which may as well be an entirely new world given the lack of support (save for...

What name would you like the next iteration of D&D to bear?

As a Mac user who has no trouble with an OS named Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2, I think the public can handle D&D V. Perhaps WotC could use a similar tactic and use monster names for new editions. D&D: Mind Flayer? D&D: Beholder?
