    RPG Evolution: When Gaming Bleeds

This x-card thing reminds me of the "training timeout" cards that were starting to be used in the military when I was in. No one liked when we pointed out that the enemy wouldn't honor a "fighting timeout" so why would you train differently than you fight? If you are an adult and playing a...

Pathfinder 2 and the game Paizo should have made

That may be so, but at the end of the day, PF2e is still based upon a specific implementation of the d20 mechanic. I don't interpret how I play my PC based upon the mechanics. The mechanics may help immersion if they are a solid attempt to emulate how we think actions or feelings would actually...

Pathfinder 2 and the game Paizo should have made

To be clear - the core mechanics of the various d20-based D&D/PF games are solid. It's when you add multiple options from various supplements that were never sufficiently playtested together that the rules start to break down.

Pathfinder 2 and the game Paizo should have made

PF2 suffers from the same flaw as every version going back to D&D3.0 - too many options that work ok in isolation but should never be allowed to be used together - I can pretty much guess with a fair certainty that the designers probably have never playtested rules from a new supplement with...

D&D 5E (2014) What type of D&D sourcebooks do you miss from older editions?

The one sourcebook that they will never publish is the one that would be the most useful: how to convert previously published adventures to each official setting and how to tie them all in to form different campaigns. Imagine if they were to spend the time to do a real serviceable job of tying...

D&D General Which edition of D&D did you grow up with?

I started with BECMI back in 1983. Was at Epcot and saw a cool looking handheld video game involving dragons and knights being sold for $20 but left my cash at the hotel. Parents refused to loan me the money. When I got back home I searched and searched to find this game and stumbled upon the...

Anyone else finding their TTRPG spending going down for lack of interest/need?

I've looked at them. I'm not loving the CCC, DDAL or DDEX mods - these are part of an organized play system and are tied together in some fashion. I'm really looking for standalone mods that *I* can tie together however I see fit, that are really short like the old 32-page TSR mods, but that...

Anyone else finding their TTRPG spending going down for lack of interest/need?

Life gets in the way - I haven't played in a steady D&D game in over a year. That having been said, when I was playing, I was really unimpressed with how WotC had been marketing their offerings over the past couple of years since 5e was introduced. I literally have no idea what their...

    Why the hate for complexity?

I would argue that part of what drives perceived complexity is how well the editing was done. Twilight:2013 is a great set of rules with not-good editing. Mythus was a set of rules hampered by purposely adding complexity in the language used and artificially upping the complexity (such as adding...

Big Changes in ICv2's RPG Industry Charts, as Pathfinder Drops Off Before 2E's Release!

I'm not shocked that pauzo dropped off the list. They'll be back when PF2e is released, but I don't think they'll have the same success for the same length of time with 2e. I would much rather have seen paizo buy the rights to the Reflex System mechanics and use that for PF2e rather than the...

tail wags dog: streamers want to say 'aaargh' so we are getting a pirate adventure

I look at grognards (such as me) as people who were around in the early days and know obscure things like *why* game rules are the way they are, what the evolution of the game is and how it came to be that way, etc. Ask someone who started out playing D&D with 3ed why different classes have...

tail wags dog: streamers want to say 'aaargh' so we are getting a pirate adventure

Yep. Maybe quite a few will like, in this case, pirates. But the people who like pirates, if they are in the minority, shouldn't be allowed to dictate to the majority, who might, say, want vampires or dragons. He seems to be stating that streamers are a minority of all D&D players who seem to...

tail wags dog: streamers want to say 'aaargh' so we are getting a pirate adventure

There is a bit of difference between hating something new just because it is new, and hating it because it didn't need to be improved to begin with. There have been plenty of things that got better with each edition of D&D for some players, yet some would consider those changes to not be an...

tail wags dog: streamers want to say 'aaargh' so we are getting a pirate adventure

Except that streamers and their audiences likely don't have any more of an impact to potential sales than grognards, or 3ed lovers, or those wishing for more Eberron stuff. Their perceived impact and their actual impact are likely vastly different.

tail wags dog: streamers want to say 'aaargh' so we are getting a pirate adventure

That isn't what he seems to mean. Rather, that some other product that has more appeal could have been developed and released on that schedule, had it not been taken up by this product.

    Best Psionics Resource

Two pre-5e options that could be adapted are Psionics Unleashed or (my personal favorite) the psionics rules from Spycraft 1e.

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

I would think you could cut down on the bookkeeping by designing the mechanics such that the heavy lifting gets done *during* the character creation process rather than in-play.

Burning Questions: What Do New DMs Need to Know?

What you aren't prepared for in session "n" you can be prepared for in session "n+1." And be more prepared than your players. For example - a player decides to ask you how high the ceiling is in the dungeon. You say "10 feet." No problem. Then a smart-aleck player asks you what type of...
