Is there a list of monsters from the hardcover adventures (i.e. Hoard of the Dragon Queen thru Tomb of Annilation)?

Some of those lists, to an old-school fan, are the best advertisement of all for those adventures! “I’m going to get Ogrémoch to sign my yearbook!”

To MAX HP or not to MAX HP

For some reason, my group has historically had Max HP as one of the things one could Wish for without the Lawyer Gods trying to finagle your wording. So we’d always use normal rolls but a lucky few would find themselves jumped up to high numbers due to a run-in with a genie or artifact.

What Extraplanar Villain Would You Like to See Detailed?

If he's got hit points, we can kill him. If we can kill him, we can loot his stuff. D&D GUITAR RIFF

Advice on helping high level non-flexible casters feel useful versus magic immune creatures

The Cap’n had it in one. You don’t need to change any rules, just make proper preparations. That’s where battlefield control strategy in D&D came from, dealing with old-school spell-resistance in AD&D (which was crazy pants strong, especially at high levels). Change terrain to slow enemies...

    Worst character possible

Or the other way around, a toad polymorphed into a 20th-level sorcerer. Just walk around absentmindedly chasing flies until danger approaches. Then say “ribbit” and roll on the Wild Surge table. (although I do love the reference)

    Dwarf height in D&D

I’m suddenly randomly picturing an overly-tall dwarf carrying a poleaxe with a basketball hoop attached. After each battle, he plants it in the ground and dunks the enemy’s skull. I blame the playoffs.

    [5E] Let's Brainstorm a Sumo Class!

I think that this raises the question of how 5e should approach martial arts styles beyond either coming up with new Monk traditions or letting the player describe how they’re fighting/grappling. Should there be feats that provide new options of attack/defense/stance? Should a few new...

Check out the Astral Deadnought from Mordenkainen's Tome

Cue the dreadnaught swallowing the only planar caster and sailing off through the astral, crying out a Three Stooges “Woop woop woop” as the rest of the party wonders what it’s going to do now...

Cleric of Gruumsh in a party with an Elf

The important point that you made is that the character is very orc but not necessarily evil. That means that you can play the relationship as one of intense competition — showing that the orcish way is better, that the elven way is weak — without crossing the line into violence. Think of it as...

    Truly, Madly, Deeply Module 01

hbarsquared, I’m suddenly reminded of when my college roommate sophomore year would play Sixpence None The Richer on repeat all the time, so I came back from winter break with the leftover change from my previous summer abroad in Ireland and handed him six pence.

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: Order Domain Cleric.

What immediately strikes me is that it has abilities that are equally useful in combat and noncombat situations: I’m thinking of the mass command and prone power in particular. That’s great in a battle (or fleeing a losing battle), of course, but it’s also useful in a heated social situation...

Initiative Variant (Speed Factor) - actual use

Hypothetically, if a party didn’t want an unconscious character to lose as many rounds, couldn’t said player technically still declare an action at 0HP, since it wouldn’t go off were the character still unconscious when initiative came around? Not how I play it myself, but a consistent way to do...

    Lifestyle Expenses in Actual Play

Downtime and lifestyle also strike me as tied in a way to background. The game sets characters up to have a life before and besides adventuring; these mechanics can serve to keep that background element active in some fashion. Consider how many of the proficiencies used in downtime will come...
