    Epic Monsters: Cerberus (5E)

I agree that CR 8 seems a little low. I'm putting a version of Cerberus myself for my homebrew campaign setting as I need something tougher to tackle a party of 7 that is already currently at 7th level and will likely be substantially higher level by the time they reach "puppy".

    Epic Monsters: Cerberus (5E)

Talk about coincidences... I literally just ordered a Cerberus toy on Amazon last night to use as a miniature stand-in since I was planning on bringing it into my campaign setting as a guardian for an important item in the campaign.

Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 1 Failure and Story

They've at the very least dealt with player character permadeath, though, which should be condition them to at least expect that their characters _can_ die, if nothing else. :)

    Savant: Basic Class Information

Props on the name of the class. I've been designing a couple of Intelligence based classes for my campaigns, and the best names I was able to come up with were Tactician (so-so) for the martial class and Expert (just sounds like a boast) or Surgeon (too narrow) for the healing/support class. I...

DMs Guild DMs Guild Roundup: Unseen Waterdeep, Le Pas D’Armes, 100 Monster Hunts

It took me a few moments to realize that the black dragon logo in the upper right corner of the cover art for Unseen Waterdeep contained a stylized "AL" for "Adventurers League" rather than a stylized "4" which I assumed meant "4E".

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

I'm just a practical, realistic person. Get back to me when the Hannibal movie with the elephants comes out and we can revisit this convo. ;) And I would pay good money to see what Hannibal Lecter would do with a bunch of elephants and soldiers in the Alps!!

    Mythological Figures: Hua Mulan (5E)

As an American-born Chinese person, I'm heartened to see legendary figures from my ancestors' culture included, especially since anytime anything "Asian" is used in Dungeons & Dragons and similar games, it seems like it's always based heavily on Japanese culture. I love how much stuff she's got...

New D&D Monsters and More in Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica

I'm ambivalent one way or another about Eberron as a setting -- I didn't play 3/3.5/4E and the idea of the world, at least at a high level, isn't that interesting to me for the most part -- but I do agree that if they're going to introduce a whole new campaign setting they shouldn't half-ass it...

New D&D Monsters and More in Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica

I'd second that. Mystara was the Dungeons & Dragons setting when I started playing way back in the day.

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

By the way, kudos on all the mythical monsters and legendary heroes that you've been doing on the main site. I didn't realize that was your work. Great stuff!

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

I'm curious how this will fly with a more general crowd. I remember watching an interview with one of the designers of Dungeons & Dragons (can't remember if it was Mearls or Crawford) who talked about the process of designing the cavalier from Unearthed Arcana all the way to what finally made it...

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

More specifically, how did players feel about the class in terms of balance? Have you gotten a lot of good playtests with it at the various tiers? What kind of approach or process do you use in playtesting the class? I'm actually quite interested in this process at the moment because I'm trying...

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

I could see a lot of challenges for players running this sort of a character in specific thematic settings. I'm using a homebrew campaign setting for the game I'm currently running, and the player characters are in a region where the civilized areas are very much human and even the typically...

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

Not exactly. Just the fact that the word has been part of the English language for well over a century and associated with classic literary tales of knights and warriors such as Arthur and Charlemagne gives it a huge leg up over a word whose use is essentially restricted to a single, non-Western...

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

I mean... I understand the author's reasoning for going with the name, but ultimately that name makes the class sound like something that's specific to a particular setting despite the generic nature of the class itself.

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

Five bucks says you'd be in the extreme minority. It's a word that 99% of the population will never hear or need to use. That circuses are all but history now makes it that much harder. ;)

    The Mahout: Basic Class Information

The challenge comes with a word such as "mahout" which really doesn't have much practical or even pop cultural use in most Western societies since "elephant rider" isn't really something that 99% of people will ever even need to think about.

I agree with your sentiment and was just giving you some grief. :) Even said as much a few posts back. ;)
