Worlds of Design: WANTED - More Game Masters

What this suggests is that, as you point out, they've built successful game lines on the back of published adventures, which I appreciate and applaud. I'd much rather see lots of adventures I can run as is or mine for ideas, rather than the splat-fest we used to have in the 2e/3e days. But as...

Worlds of Design: WANTED - More Game Masters

It saddens me to hear people complaining about how published adventures "require more prep than coming up with something on my own" or aren't as imaginative/consistent/well-crafted/etc....not because it isn't true, but because it unfortunately is true. Published adventures can and should be...

Worlds of Design: WANTED - More Game Masters

While D&D may skew towards having too few GMs vs. players, for smaller games my experience suggests the opposite problem (I'm always seeing GMs saying they can't get players to try such and such a game). So maybe part of the solution is to find ways to get more players to try non-D&D games.

Candlekeep Mysteries Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

I haven't read the book so can't comment on the quality of adventures, but I love the format, short stand-alone adventures are always useful for dropping into campaigns or using as one-offs or just looting for ideas, NPCs, monsters etc. It seems like the book would be even easier for folks to...

RPG Print News – Atlas Games, Frog God Games, and More

Yep, and if there's anyone who can pull off a PvP scenario, it's Greg Stolze...definitely getting this one.

Clarence Redd, Creator of M-Space, Discusses Sci-Fi, Aliens, and RPGs

Nice to see someone succeed the old-fashioned way. No kickstarters, no promises, no weight of expectation, just make things people like and build on that success. KS is an amazing tool and it has opened the floodgates for indie developers, but it's not the only viable path.

RPG Crowdfunding News – The Griffon’s Saddlebag, Fading Suns, World Wide Wrestling, and More

Not Kickstarter, but our sales numbers on drivethrurpg (Gildor Games) suggest that the virus is having an impact. Downloads of our free products are up, while the paid products are down; both quite significantly. We've shifted our messaging towards the free stuff, it's what a lot of gamers want...

Abilities scores for an universtal system.

Late to the party here.... For Elemental, we settled on: Agility Toughness Awareness Will There isn’t a “perfect” answer and the argument will never be settled. But we’ve always found these stats to be mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive and well balanced for most settings.

Kid-friendly adventure where you are shrunk and sent on a quest between the floors and walls of an old mansion

Our last Elemental scenario (Nightcrawlers) proved very popular, so I thought y’all might like to know about the new one. Like all of our scenarios, it’s free or pay-what-you-want. She Lost Her Marbles: The PCs are neighborhood kids who decide to explore that creepy old house at the edge of...

Which of these D&D classes would you take if you had to choose one?

Gemini could be fun. We’ve got a similar concept in my current campaign: a two-headed ogre. At the start of each session he rolls randomly (50/50) to determine which head is in control of the character. One of them is a brutish warrior, the other a mage. During the session the player can reroll...

Nice, the site we never knew we needed!

    What are you currently playing?

We're playing ELEMENTAL every 6 weeks of so. While it would be nice to play more often, the lower frequency means that each session feels like an "event" that everyone looks forward to. It also allows us to take turns GMing and experience different playstyles and stories. And if I may interject...

Call of Cthulhu as a Horror Game

I think horror requires a high standard of scenario writing, perhaps higher than other genres. Also, you need players who want to be scared. If they're in the mood for "beer and pretzels", better to go with the flow than try to change the mood. There are a lot of mediocre scenarios, as you...

John Wick Presents Lays Off 7th Sea Staff

I don't think this year has been a bad year for the industry. But it has taught us that there is a difference between launching a successful game, and having a business model that generates a steady revenue stream over time. I wish JW the best and hope we continue to have a vibrant "indie" scene.

Attempting to make a super light RPG: QUICKD6

Love it!! The static damage, while simple, means that you can't take down a even a kobold in one hit, and the dragon deals as much damage as anyone else. What if we said that the damage you cause is equal to the number of 6's you rolled, if you win the combat roll? Yes, this means that sometimes...

    Seeking multigenre rpg system

There's a new game called ELEMENTAL which meets all but possibly one of the OP's criteria. Full disclosure: I'm one of the designers! Happy to answer any questions.

Scheduling Conflicts: How do you solve 'em?

I do one of two things in this situation (neither of which involves cancelling the game): 1. Run a one-shot. Maybe a different game, maybe a side-trek with the characters who are there, maybe a "flashback scene" that happened in the past (you may have to deal with continuity issues in that...

Super compact way of presenting Module information

That's very cool. Making modules easier to use at the table is something we don't see enough (or at all, really) from the game companies. This is a good example of how much better it could be, with basic technology. Well done, sir!
