Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

That's fair, but I'm speaking from my perspective: I'm seen him play the tormanted character a lot. I would love to see what he does playing a different type. We got a bit of it in AoU but his character wasn't around for long. The whole episode, I kept thinking that they could have used some...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

One can only hope. I dunno - for me it's a strange way to start a series. Four hours of people talking and not doing much of anything. There's little story momentum or energy - there's barely even dice rolls, let alone combat. Imagine deciding to check out CR and this is what you tune in for as...

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

It's only noticeable to nerds like us. My players couldn't tell you the difference.

TTRPG players wanted for online psychology study

Shows you how closely I read consents! Oh, yeah 20 years being the maximum length of time with RPGs is way lot for this forum. I'm at 45, and I'm think I'm pretty typical around these parts. Although for your purposes, maybe 20+ years is essentially all the same data point anyway.

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

Sort of this. I use the 2024 rules but they subsume 2014 pretty seamlessly, so when players use older species or subclasses, or I use older monsters or whatever, it’s not noticeable. So I use “5e.” From my player’s perspectives, we just play D&D; they mostly don’t know or care about editions and...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

The tone of this first episode reminds me a lot of Calamity. There’s a massive lore dump, a lot of talking in slow, hushed voices, and a sense of imminent doom. Hopefully once they get out in the world we can get more emergent storytelling. But it feels like they want to go for a predetermined...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

Well, the intro is the exact opposite of the tone I was hoping for. I hope it becomes fun soon.

Incidentally, I couldn't help but notice that an awful lot of your questions are similar to tests for ASD. Intentional, I assume?

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Tracking can be fun in situations of scarcity, as you describe, and for me that typically includes low level campaigns, since I like the players starting with very little and earning their way up. By the time they hit mid-level play and have some gold in their pockets, tracking stuff like ammo...

ChatGPT lies then gaslights reporter with fake transcript

It's great at certain types of searches. For example, translating plain language into a search. Example: today, a student wanted to know how to turn one type of audio file to another on her macbook, and Google was giving her confusing results so I told her to try Chat, which gave her step by...

ChatGPT lies then gaslights reporter with fake transcript

Most work-related writing is not creative, nor about creating new knowledge. Predictive text is highly useful in a large number of applications. Which is why, for example, law firms have been using it for some years to produce most of their rote paperwork. It also has plenty of intriguing...

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

I hope you're right, but man, that trailer and now talking about bloodbaths. And didn't they say something about players being gone for good if their character dies? I feel like I read or heard that in one of their many communications, but, eh, memory. And his previous stint on CR was a real...

Hasbro Opens New Wizards of the Coast Video Game Studio in Montreal to Support D&D Franchise

I'm just happy that, in the current climate, an American company is going ahead and opening a new branch in Canada. Remember when that used to be unexceptional? Like eight months ago? Anyway, this makes me look more positively on WotC.

Paul Thomas Anderson Movies: Ranked! (And discussion)

I get where you're coming from with DDL, but on the other hand he is a technically great actor, and when I'm watching one his films I'm not distracted by his celebrity the way I am with, say, a Tom Cruise. There's a bit of the Ben Stiller/Robert Downey Tropic Thunder dynamic to this debate...

I would presume so - he's a pretty experienced DM.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

My understanding is that swords were almost never a weapon of first resort. Most soldiers carried one, or a long knife, but ranged weapons and some variation of the spear were typically kings of the battlefield, no? Swords are the sexy weapon of fantasy fiction and historical romance, though...

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

That was my least favourite CR campaign, partly because of the overall bleak tone, but also because the story was entirely on rails; I almost didn't finish. To each their own, but if this campaign feels like that, it will likely be the first CR campaign I abandon. I am hoping that the tone is...

    Costumes and Cosplay

Hmmmm…it is time to start thinking about it. I was a Camp Crystal Lake counsellor last year, with a few colleagues, and I think I was Ash from Evil Dead the year before. I tend to like a bit of gore. OP, I like your second option more, especially with crab (who became the surprise breakout...

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

Oh dear. I want fun, games night D&D, not heavy, serious D&D. Age of Umbra killed off almost everyone, and it was bleak, man. And when characters died, the player was permanently out of the campaign. Nothing says fun like "oh, your character died? Take your dice and go home! No more D&D for you!"

D&D General Actual Play: Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set

Originally posted elsewhere, but it makes more sense here: In our first game, the characters met and traveled together to the Keep, getting to know each other on the way. Then they interacted with the guards (I've tweaked Bartho to be a secret cultist, and connected to the vandalism at the...
