D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Yes, but, did you buy those items or find them? Look, again, I'm not really looking for a fix to be honest. I know this is 100% a ME problem. The players like it. They have no problems with it and seem to gravitate towards it every single time, so, obviously it's pretty clearly what they...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

If that was true, I'd likely not have any real problems. But, the second I allow magic items to be bought, interesting goes straight out the window in favor of practicality. In all the years since 3e when you could build or buy magic items, on forward, not one single time have I seen a player...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I would point you in the direction of The Griffon's Saddlebag - Reddit - The heart of the internet - there are a mountain of really interesting magic weapons there. For example, one I gave out in my Phandelver campaign was a magic axe that negates Incorporeal for 1 minute. A minor magic item -...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Then go play that. 🤷 To me, it's so utterly pointless. If a player actually wanted to buy interesting magic items, or make them, I'd bend over backwards to make it happen. But, nope. It's +1 Swords with Smite charges or Flaming Weapons all day long. It's to the point where I'm just...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

Really, I would be over the moon if a player gave me that sort of background. "You belong to some sort of organization? Would you like that to be a thing in the game? FANTASTIC!" I keep telling my players that I will not weaponize their backgrounds without their express permission. No one...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

I mean, heck, squiredom is a perfect reason to become an adventurer. You became an adventurer because you were apprenticed to an adventurer. No tragedy required. It's not like a paladin or a druid or a ranger never took on a squire/acolyte.

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

But, isn't that what most artificers do? Whether you're the SUmmon the TUrret artificer blasting away with your arcane turret, or the pet artificer whose golem attack dog is doing force damage all day long. I thought the definition of gish was a character whose magical powers enhance their...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

See, but that's my problem. It doesn't actually work. All it does is means that you wind up in this vicious circle where the DM just jps the baddies because the PC's are dealing more damage, so the PC's up their damage, so the DM picks bigger baddies. It's a treadmill with zero actually...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Oh, I totally understand why it happens. Totally get it. Just hate it with a passion.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

See, that's even more pointless to me. Endlessly frustrating the players - "Oh, sorry, you can't find that magic item today, come back later" - is not improving anything. Because players only try to buy stuff that's 100% practical. They will never buy stuff that's interesting. Making it into...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

For me, and this is purely my own preference, I detest buying magic items. It's so pointless. The party buys magic items that give the most bang for the buck. So, the DM just adjusts the monsters to the new math because the DM doesn't want the party steam rolling encounters. Which means the...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

But, that's the problem. 3e had the wealth by level tables, as did 4e, and people did nothing but bitch about it. It's "dictating" a specific playstyle, goes the argument. So, sure, while I totally agree that that level of transparency should be in the game, I also know that that ship sailed...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Maybe I'm a bit thick here, but, isn't arcane gish an Artificer? I mean, they've got the spells, powers and extra attack. In what way isn't an artificer an arcane gish?

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

No, folks, you have to remember, any and all positive statements about 4e must be argued to death. It is not permitted that anything positive be attributed to 4e without constant, neverending challenge. Fifteen years just isn't enough time to let stuff go, apparently.

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

But... that's not how warlords ever worked. It was almost always the warlord's turn when the character took an action and then granted actions to other PC's. Very, very few warlord actions were reactive. I agree, a reactive warlord would be a PITA.

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Oy, if you want to play something 3pp, bring it to the table. :D I'm all in.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Yeah that was very much my experience too. SInce there were no actual 2nd level healing spells, and about the only "curing" spell IIRC, was something like Slow Poison, 2nd level did see a lot of somewhat more offensive spells. Like you said, spiritual hammer, zone of truth, yeah. That sort of...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

As an aside, back in the 2e days, we tried an experiment. Clerics didn't choose their spells. They just had the slots per day and could cast whatever spells were on the cleric list as needed. Funny thing was, 99% of the time, the cleric was casting pretty much exactly the same things - lots...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

And, really, like all things, there's a spectrum. Life has tragedies. That's just life. So, sure, I can totally get behind that for inspiring a character. But, like all things, it does become something of a cliche when every single PC is an orphan, abused by life, scarred and whatnot, and...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

So, great. You agree with me. Swords were not dominant in the past. Some people used them and some people used something else. D&D, OTOH, has made swords the dominant weapon for years. The best magic weapons, the most commonly awarded magic weapon, the most commonly pictured in art. At...
