D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I enjoyed this tidbit of information. Okay...I agree that it requires a more involved fix. I'm a little slow, can you provide me an example of what you mean by not particularly threatening debuffs? And dangerous monsters vanishing after a long or short rest? Agree, it is amazing how easy it...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Separate the party... Last session the PCs took on Iymrith in her lair, she separated the party by collapsing one of the corridors. I did though have to decrease her Legendary Actions as she was fighting only 1 PC.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It was fairly logical that between a Short Rest and Long Rest there should have been a Travel Rest... Anyways it doesn't matter we've had 10+ years to homebrew and fix their mistakes and we have plenty of 5e derivatives, not mention DMsGuild content.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

That is how I envision a divine spellcaster to be thematically. Prayers in the heat of the moment.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I've only had limited exposure to a pool system, when I played a 3.5e psion (campaign was for levels 8-12) but we didn't get very far (handful of sessions) due to a slacker DM. I loved the class and the freedom of the psionic powers but I wasn't sitting on the other side of the DM screen. What I...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Who said they had to fit in them entirely? Whatever that loaded term means... Players decide a whole host of decisions at the table that are based sometimes primarily off game mechanics. Engaging (Fighting), Resting, Reactions, Divine Smite (i.e. when natural 20's are rolled), Flanking, Focus...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Our house rule Levels 1-2 cost 1 HD Levels 3-4 cost 2 HD Levels 5-6 cost 3 HD etc... And if you run out of HD you may gain Levels of Exhaustion at rate of 1 LoE = 1 HD. Then again our recovery system is also grittier than the standard.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Not sure if someone has mentioned this upthread but 2e has weapon familiarity for weapons a fighter was not proficient in. That edition also has tight and broad weapon groups. Some all of those concepts can be tacked onto 5e. For instance 1/2 proficiency bonus for weapons one would be...

D&D General Hit Points are a great mechanic

That's fair. The Hit Point explosion from 3x onwards has definitely affected the game IMO, particularly at higher levels. I'm more keenly aware of it because PCs at my table are 15th and I need care not to create any grinding combat situations.

D&D General Hit Points are a great mechanic

The balance of roleplaying/storytelling and game and where we (general) land between the two is different from table to table and player to player.

Does the Death Curve Beat the Death Spiral?

We have such a system in place where the players decide how their characters are injured...you're still unconscious at 0 hit points but you have alternatives to your character just losing hit points every time they take damage. And as a GM I don't hold my punches.

D&D General Hit Points are a great mechanic

Well I tend to think of Hit Points as Stamina with exhaustion levels and lingering injuries as actual wounds which affect action declarations and recovery (at least with our homebrew rules). So yes Hit Points work and if you want more complexity, options for a more nuanced system exist as an add-on.

    Violence and (Geek) Entertainment

Yes. When (bad word) people spend THAT much money on superhero movies they could at least get a decent script and not bend reality that much. Make the effort is what I'm saying - and its not like I cannot enjoy superhero movies, but this thread is about the consequences of violence and...

    Violence and (Geek) Entertainment

Lovely, I'm talking in terms of following the natural principles of science. I'm not talking about superheroic powers or superheroes existing. I should not have to explain myself as it is 2025 but here we are again with this silly argument. We have to cover it in RPGs I guess we need to cover it...

    Violence and (Geek) Entertainment

Consequences and realism is something superhero movies are pretty poor at. And dumb down audiences eat it up and keep on supporting the machine so Hollyweird keeps making the same shlock year after year. It's why I disliked Man of Steel. And it's not just violence, it's everything. There is...
