Why do all classes have to be balanced?

See Ars Magica - Magi, Companions and Grogs in order of decreasing power or ability. (1987, Jonathan Tweet, Mark Rein-Hagen) While D&D is "a RPG", it can't, or shouldn't, be used to represent all RPGs.

Suggest Your "Rule of Three" Questions for Next Week (4/17)

Appendices O, P, Q ... As Mike Mearls indicated on the recent panel discussion, different generations of players have different background assumptions about the nature of heroic fantasy. (When I started DMing for my 8 year-old son I think it was Power Rangers in his mind's eye) Recently, there...

    Falling from Great Heights

"Rumour" including Gygax saying this in public at a TSR(UK) GamesFair in Reading in the early 80s. This was written up in Imagine magazine IIRC.

    MAR Barker 1929 - 2012, RIP

RIP Prof. Your world gave my friends and me many hours of enjoyment. Few now have the time, vision and expertise to create such awesome worlds for game and fiction. You had a singular vision. I hope that those of us who joined the Clan of Tekumeli Gamers can continue the adventures and your...

New WotC Article - Deadly Dice

Risk = (danger) * (frequency of exposure) ?? So, how often you fight opponents that dangerous too.... Absolutely but I also like a lot of story before you even get to the encounters with opponents that could be fought. Agree - when push does come to shove combat should be desperate and...

    L&L 3/05 - Save or Die!

It's an interesting journey that D&D is on - but some roads have been travelled before. IIRC there was an extended letters' page debate in White Dwarf (in the late 70s) between Gygax and Don Turnbull on the meaning of HP. A system suggested in WD was that it's only real ouch-bleeding damage...

    L&L 3/05 - Save or Die!

You have misread it. It's an IF ... THEN statement. It doesn't say that the gaze will reduce you to 25 HP.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next: Deal with it, DM?

Yes. Gamers whose play style or expectations are defined by one edition - or who favour one particular edition - get to play together in a system that highlights core aspects of D&D. This is not the same as bringing characters from those editions to one table and playing them simultaneously...

L&L: The Challenges of High Level Play

I think that it's partly expectation managment and partly testing the waters. If the designers really want to do X or think that Y might be a good idea - then airing A and Y in a poll sees what the reaction might be. I guess that a balanced "Meh" reaction means that they can push something...

    How Weird Should D&D Be?

I think OD&D-style, at least in the way weplayed it, had quite a few "weird" through-the-looking-glass type things where up would become down, you'd arbitrarily be shrunk or your characteristics would be temporarily jumbled. Fun like this _was_ fun - but can't really be grounded in a semsible...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too

Opposed rolls are less swingy. If you mean (A+ d20) vs (B + d20). This comes down to +d20-d20 vs B-A (rather than d20 vs (B+10)-A ??) The shape of a the probability distribution of d20-d20 is the same as d20+d20, if that helps see the shape.# For d20-d20 there are 20/400 ways to get a...

What exactly is "Roleplaying", Do We Think?

I think that Fighting Fantasy style gamebooks enable "roleplaying alone". I realise that they do tend to have a mechanical system - to a greater or lesser extent. However, I think that they do suffciently capture the idea of roleplaying that they are a good thing to put in any sort of starter...

A Better Way to Do Critical Hits?

Can a numerate analytical player help us here? I thought that the modern game maths (/4e I guess) was that players should be hitting ~50% of the time. The sounds to me like rolling d20 to get 10+ It also means that you'll be getting (AC+10) 5% of the time - on 10% of hits.
