D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I think when talking modules its important to be specific to which ones youre thinking of. There's a difference between Dragonlance and I6, T1 and B2, and the Caverns of Thracia and other JG products in expectations for modules. Not to mention the modules that were explicitly tournament modules...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

The issue is the designers of 2e thought the 1e ranger was just too cool so they nerfed it, and everyone's been dunking on it since.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Eh, I like the 10 segment round with a d6 initiative. It helps most spells finish within the same round with minimal spill over (except for high level spells).

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Its working well enough for my group who is relatively new to 1e (~1.5 years) :) The WvAC, Weapon Speed, Psionics, Unarmed Combat stuff isn't so bad. Initiative taken in an OSRIC style lens helps a lot. It flows pretty smoothly for us now after about a month of playing. Though my group...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

I think there's a lot of things that in isolation seems unfair or unbalanced, but actually are reasonable when you consider the game holistically and in the lens of a long term campaign.

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

It says nothing of the sort :) just says that you gain four 1st level magic user spells but they use your seventh level spell slots if you cast them. No language about downplaying the power to a 1st level equivalent MU. Just that they come from the 1st level MU list, and you gain an additional...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

To be fair, you're still casting those low level spells as a high level character. That magic missile is coming out of the gate with some force! And burning hands will actually deal damage that makes getting that close to enemies worth it!

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I agree, I see Dragons as main checkpoint enemy type/threat at the mid to high level opponent range. They're still fighting mortal Prime Material plane creatures at this point until the characters level up more and are delving into the hells to face the next tier of threat: demons and devils

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Ill say that this doesnt reflect my current play experience, fighters (even without 18 str) routinely outshine clerics in combat, durability, and weapon flexibility. But I am but one DM playing for one table.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

My final thoughts are that there were two fundamental changes that created the linear fighter quadratic wizard problem (at least for 5e, cant speak for 3/3.5): 1. Making all classes generally at parity for chance to hit and for damage (removing the fighter niche) 2. Removing spell interruption...

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

I think its a fair and logical interpretation, but one i personally do not believe is prescribed.

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

Im inclined to rule that since there are specific penalties listed for other classes changing alignment that do not exist for some classes, then there is no reason for a DM to impose their own extra penalties on characters for changing alignment. The Monk, the Druid, the Paladin, and the Ranger...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The DMG also notes below the magic item table that the DM should feel free to alter or adjust magic items to not destroy the balance of the game. So the rules expected for the DM to arrange it so that the items were appropriate for the party. And if you mess up, a well placed fireball or other...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

Man wouldn't it be something we got the return of the Illusionist class? Full circle!

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

You follow the rules in the DMG for changing alignment. It even defines what to do if it's involuntary! Typically level loss, and restoration after atonement and a gold sacrifice if it is involuntary (curse, magic item, etc). Characters who voluntarily change alignment permanently lose a level...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

This feels like the result of the original, basic, and advanced game all doing nearly the same thing but differently. The XP lost vs 1 minus the next level highlights this. However, As a person running a 1e game and have previously run a B/X game who is reading the rules as an adult for the...

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

I disagree with this interpretation, but I understand how you get to the conclusion. For me it's as simple as the Bard has special requirements and if you meet those requirements and do the things printed on the bard specific box you can do the bard thing. But now im just repeating myself from...
