The GM is Not There to Entertain You

As someone who primarily DMs I definitely feel that one of my primary duties is being responsible for running an entertaining game, and consequently, entertaining my players. However, it does run both ways and my players are also responsible for being engaged and making the game fun for me and...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

Hard sci-fi, as I understand it, is a type of sci-fi that tries to make the science credible and does it's best to adhere to actual scientific concepts with some level of accuracy. Obviously, sci-fi generally can't be a slave to actual scientific accuracy since some story concepts may be needed...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

You're right, it's not. That's why it always amuses me when someone calls Trek "hard sci-fi".

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

I agree that while it was a good episode but it was the weakest of the three so far. I didn't care for it turning out that Number One was an Illyrian and an augment, it just felt forced to me. I also didn't care for the reveal that M'Benga was keeping his daughter in the pattern buffer...

    Buying to not use

I bought Pathfinder for Savage Worlds as part of the Kickstarter and even when I bought it I was pretty sure I would never use it. I played 3.x/Pathfinder for longer than probably any other game and when I got burned out I moved to Savage Worlds. I was really curious to see how PEG made the two...

D&D General Dungeon Magazine's Top 30 Adventures: Do they hold up?

Some I've run in the fairly recent past (spoiler - they all hold up). As a side note; all were campaigns I ran that were converted to Castels & Crusades in case that matters to anyone. GDQ1-7 Queen of the Spiders - I've run this twice, the first time was only the Against the Giants portion and...

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

Because with a little salt and pepper every edition is tasty :)

    I’m crushing your head 😂

I had no idea this was a thing. I'm generally not a fan of sketch comedy but I love The Kids in the Hall. Need to check this out

    Does TSR3 Have Nazi Connections?

Why do these people have to poop on all of my fond TSR childhood memories?

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

Ok, I think we are having two different conversations here. If I reference a meta-analysis that looks at dozens of studies and is the consensus opinion of the scientific community to support my stance on a topic I am appealing to authority (small case letters intentional), a group of experts...

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

I didn't mean to imply there were exceptions in the way you took it. What I meant was that, as I stated in a prior post, is that not everything that sounds like a logical fallacy is one. Appealing to authority isn't always a fallacy, sometimes it's referencing expert opinion.

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

This is why pointing out fallacies is bad argumentation. They are meant to help you to reason better, not to toss in peoples faces.

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

And this is kind of a variation on the point I made earlier, arguing fallacies isn't productive. With a little effort it's not hard to find an exception to any informal fallacy, it's kind of built into their nature.

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

I was going to like your post but then I read the last line and instead think I am going to seek out a bottle of whiskey to blot out the sadness.....

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

I almost wish that were the case. Mentioning the fallacy you think someone has violated is poor argumentation. Trying to understand why someone said/believes what they said and then countering the point if needed is the better way to go. Fallacies should guide your reasoning, not be used as a...

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

That is most certainly true, and works both ways, but unless we can mind-read or perform psychological evaluations we really have no choice, in my view (especially when speaking in general terms such as in this thread), but to take others at their word. Ascribing motivations without evidence is...

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

These are opinions held by individual gamers about the system and are entirely subjective. The sunk cost fallacy is the unwillingness to change a behavior based on previously invested time. If the player agreed with the argument that the stats were a dubious system but refused to change "because...

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

Which is largely the problem with informal logical fallacies. Sometimes there is honest disagreement on their application and sometimes there are those who only have a basic, or no, understanding of their proper usage but still insist on using them (not saying that is what you are doing).

    D&D General Why TSR-era D&D Will Always Be D&D

Maybe it was because of my age but when I was playing 1E fights weren't something to be avoided, as a kid it was most of the fun of the game. Yes, there was a lot of risk and fatalities were more common than now but if I avoided fights I probably wouldn't have discovered much treasure or had as...
