D&D General Lore & Legends Forgotten Realms map now available.

I was thinking of buying the Lore & Legends collector’s edition partly to get this (gorgeous) map, but now that I see a detailed version, the misplaced locations really bug me. And they’re not just slightly misplaced. The Stone Bridge isn’t even on the river, the Temple of the Elemental Eye is...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

I sometimes roll. Usually what I do instead is, when more than one of a single monster type appears in an encounter, I will “fake roll” by adjusting HP around the average. So zombie 1 will have an extra 5 HP while zombie 2 will be down 5, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

Storm King’s Thunder includes a whole encounter set in Triboar, including a keyed map of the town. Although the encounter does involve giants, it is easily repurposed for campaigns other than SKT. If LMoP/DoIP players should decide to head to Triboar for whatever reason, that’s what I would run...

D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

While this is certainly true, it’s also true that editing and proofing are very difficult tasks, and mistakes are bound to slip past even the most careful of us every once in a while. That’s why you build in redundancy—the editor, the copy editor, and the proofreader ideally will be three...

D&D General Penguin Random House To Stop Distributing D&D [UPDATED!]

Random House doesn’t just distribute D&D books—they also publish them. Novels, that is: the current Dragonlance trilogy as well as the movie tie-in novels were all published by Random House. That publishing deal is probably based on a totally different contract than the distribution deal. But...

    D&D 5E (2014) OAR #8

Oh don’t worry—WotC is already itself distributing the card sets that GF9 designed.

    D&D 5E (2014) OAR #8

I would guess that WotC includes a blanket "You can never publicly discuss anything about this deal for all eternity" clause in all their contracts. For example, their lincensing arrangement with Gale Force Nine ended at some point in the past year or so—quietly, with absolutely no comment from...

What is the best chain fast food restaurant?

No love at all for Freddy's, huh? I guess that surprises me a little. It's relativley widespread with roughly 450 franchises (about 60 more than In-N-Out) and is my thirteen-year-old son's favorite chain by far. (To be fair, I hate it.)

Survey: RPG play up 37% since pandemic, interest in D&D up 85%

The numbers don’t add up to 100% because people are sleeping, eating, maybe watching TV. A little less of respondents said they are spending 6.9% of their free time on tabletop games. A little more of respondents said they are spending 25.5% of their free time on them. And so on. It’s a very...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMing for Neurodiverse Tweens

I have several years of recent experience regularly DMing 5e for one autistic tween and one highly ADHD tween in a group filled out with their parents as the other players. I have also DM'd 5e for several other autistic and ADHD tweens in the past. Other posters' advice given above is...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Schley hints at something bigger than Phandelver, The Book of Many Things, and even Planescape!

Obviously this is a tease of a new, original setting designed for Large PCs: Bigby Presents: Bigly in Bigworld

D&D 5E (2024) Druid metal armor restriction gone?

I always figured the 5e design team tried to balance the druid using the metal restriction to eliminate some of the obvious ways of boosting AC, on the theory that the enormous amount of temp HP granted by wild shape needed to be offset by making the non-wild-shaped druid easier to hit. It...

    Which Middle Earth RPG?

I never experienced either of the Cubicle 7 games, but I have played TOR 2e and have read through the LotR Roleplaying core rules. I think TOR 2e a fantastic game. I know that some TOR 1e afficianados are displeased by a few of the mechanical changes, but I can't speak to that. In your position...

D&D 5E (2014) Beadle and Grimm Announces Phandelver Legendary Edition For October

My thoughts exactly. Richard Baker's work is great, but I doubt he will be participating in this. I'm convinced Lost Mine of Phandelver is so great because WotC was so busy working on the 2014 manuals that they didn't have any time on their hands to mess up Richard Baker's module and just...

D&D 5E (2014) Baldur's Gate 3 will allow us to explore the whole city of Baldur's Gate Seamlessly

Maybe. I admit I was suprised when he tweeted out that it didn't even bother him that his name was absent from the credits of Honor among Thieves. But by all accounts he's just a very good-natured fellow (sometimes overly good-natured, if "good-natured" can be said to include a character trait...

D&D 5E (2014) Baldur's Gate 3 will allow us to explore the whole city of Baldur's Gate Seamlessly

Right. Which is what makes it remarkable (to me, anyway) that Greenwood adheres so closely to "canon" when answering lore questions.

D&D 5E (2014) Baldur's Gate 3 will allow us to explore the whole city of Baldur's Gate Seamlessly

Even "Elminster's Forgotten Realms" includes references to the Spellplague. WotC marketing at the time made "Elminster's Forgotten Realms" sound like it contained an alternate FR based on Greenwood's original vision. There are some photos in that book of archival documents such as original...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragonix's Deadly Denizens Volume III Kickstarter is LIVE and FUNDED!

I guess so, though I'm not sure where the idea comes from. WotC has even decided to retcon Bigby himself from a human to a gnome.

Rumour that Disney will have to sell Lucas Film and some parks to pay for Hulu
