D&D General Take A Look At The Class Boards From The New D&D Starter Set

theyre not though, just different. also psychologically it should be easier for a brand new player to pick up a discrete bit of info on a card and put it into the right slot on the board than a new player flicking through a rule book and then trying to slot that same info into the cloud of...

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

The Real Friar Tuck: a Royal Writ was issued 9th February 1417 for the arrest of "one assuming the name of Frere Tuk and other evildoers of his retinue who have committed divers murders, robberies, depredations, felonies, insurrections, trespasses, oppressions, extortions, offences and...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Yes historic witches and warlocks got their powers from CONSORTING with devils, they involved themselves in elaborate rituals - dancing with beasts and fey in the forest, sacrificing chickens, doing morning libations to the four corners etc etc. The Witches greymalkin is a great model for a...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Yeah I'm of the opinion that Warlock pact should always come with a Dark gift of some kind (borrowing Ravenlofts term), there should at the very least be a rp ribbon attached to a Pact patron, even if it is something mild like a persistent watcher or annoying voices. The Pact is also explicit...

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

really? - why is the character doing a particular task if not driven by their intent? surely the determination of outcomes provides the praxis of the game play driven by intent. Sure I know DnD is task focussed but what do you do when a failure to get over the wall occurs?

    OSR Do Shadows make noise?

I always assume silent, they are ethereal beings without substance, they absorb vitality though so can be felt or seen as a movement amidst the darkness (because darkness isnt a single colour)

D&D General How much Ars Magica is in Dungeons and Dragons 3e?

pretty much, the Ars Magica system is essentially just flexible skill-based spell casting, and theres lots of attempts at that for DnD

D&D General How much Ars Magica is in Dungeons and Dragons 3e?

nothing to do with Ars Magica and misrepresents what the designers were doing with mages. There was no deliberate decision to make spellcasting more powerful rather than was a symptom of the design philosophy that pushed balance by removing class limitations and making things more flexible...

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

Generally I suggest you should use C) The GM sets the scene, setting up opposition, then the PCs say how they want to proceed then roll at the end to determine if they achieve their goal? If they succeed GM frames a new scene. If they fail opposition is triggered and the PCs must react to it...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

So hows this for an inciting incident? The obsidian tower of Kalak’s great ziggurat rises high over Tyr, heat still radiating from the stones, though both suns hang low on the horizon. The streets bustle uneasily—merchants bartering quickly, templars in bone armor patrolling, eyes sharp for...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

I'm not sure what this thread is about anymore but your post reminded me of the 1985 Earthshaker! module for BECMI Companion Level which featured a giant, steam-powered iron robot terrorizing the PCs barony. So a 40 year old example of actual steampunk gnomes

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

I for one have never use 'The Americas' and instead use America to mean both North and Central America. But South America gets its own tag (specifically Chile, Brazil, Argentina) Strangely enough Americans refers specifically to USAians - so North America is occupied by Canadians, Mexicans and...
