Maybe I'm just a simple mutated country chicken who is also a lawyer, but wouldn't it be easier to just ditch the CR and have XP budgets based on the difficulty of the fight and the number and level of PCs? Adding CR as an encounter difficulty advisory seems a bit unnecessary.

I cut my teeth on 2nd edition when I was in Jr. High and High School. I read those books a lot of the time because I liked the flavor they brought and the ideas they generated. I may have started with B/X, but 2e was the game that I played the most as a kid.

Mind == blown. This seems like a significant change in strategy for the D&D line. I'm way more interested in Tyranny of Dragons now than I was before.
