I've been procrastinating on watching this one, maybe now I'll make the time, thanks for the recommendation.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I'm sure there are other ways to address it, but I think PF2e addressed it well in their own way- but importantly, I have little practical experience with PF2e. If someone here plays or runs it regularly, it'd be nice to hear from you on this topic!

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

It's been cast a few times, but only in the A5E version where it gets a buff because it counts as a Haven; havens are required to get rid of fatigue+strife (A5E's Exhaustion), and usually they're an inn or stronghold, somewhere safe and comfortable. Tiny Hut is a powerful exception, though it...

    D&D 5E (2024) Forgotten Realms subclasses discussion.

Check out A5E 😅 in combat, they can be scarier than the casters.

    I made a terrible life decision…

Seeing other folks shelves makes me feel better about my own crazy collection 😅 I'm not alone..

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Pathfinder 2e's spell degrees of success/failure handle these spells interestingly- if a creature succeeds vs the Paralyze spell (their version of Hold) then it is Stunned 1. That means that they lose 1 of their actions (IIRC pf2e creatures get 3 action per turn). On a fail theyre paralyzed for...

    D&D 5E (2014) A L12 (level 12 limit) Variant

Hey, I'm always interested in "E6" variant rules. How much play did either of your houseruled attempts get? Are you (still) using them?

D&D General Metal Miniatures Based On the 1977 D&D Basic Set Box

Metal is a little more of a pain to paint and it chips easier, but it does have a nice heft. Usually the reason you do metal is because you're not a big production... But I guess a lot of smaller productions do 3d printing of plastics nowadays, so yeah metal like this is a bit retro. I like...

Homebrew Regarding converting O5E third party and homebrew classes to A5E

Yup! Add equivalent class knacks and maneuvers if appropriate. The only class that I've straight up compared is the berserker v barbarian, going on that the berserker has improved features over the barbarian, plus knacks and maneuvers. So based on that, power-wise, any 5e14-balanced class could...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

It's sounding like at some of these tables, things just happen to the party, and the players have to react. So I can see why they aren't going to be drinking potions of resistance beforehand, there is no beforehand. They just walk from one encounter to the next without having any idea of whatll...

D&D General Would a feat be right for the ability to cast/use scrolls? (Nevermind)

I made it a skill check. Casting Spells from a Scroll: Arcane spells - Arcana Primal spells - Nature Divine spells - Religion DC to cast is 10 + 2xSpell Level Fail = scroll is burned up Fail by 5 or more = Spell Scroll Mishap Table

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

Those potions all last a least a minute, and some like giant strength an hour or more! With a little information-gathering or scouting, the party can easily drink potions before they get into a fight- potions don't make loud noises like spellcasting either, so the folk on the other side of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

I think this ends up being a conversation about bonus actions, at least in part. Bonus actions have grown far, far bigger than their original design intent, which IIRC Mike Mearls called a band-aid and something the designer(s) regret. But players like them, because it means they can do more on...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

I imagine folk that say it's hype/press numbers are having this discussion for the same reason as the folk that say it's not creative number-play: because such discussion and speculation is another way of engaging with the hobby. Personally I have no doubt that the 2024 books are selling way...

D&D General 5e (2014 and 2024) pacing Issues and how to fix them (+Thread)

Yup. 5e characters are already pretty potent. To OPs original point, could just restoring small amounts of class resources for pushing themselves accomplish a similar goal? That of course would require that the 5 minute adventuring day couldnt occur, but personally I haven't had that problem...

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeons of Drakkenheim: a dark fantasy sandbox in a ruined city

Wow, I like the Haze effects... This is the kind of thing that gets me interested enough in a book to pick it up... Though I'm so jaded by PC power fantasy that I'm sort of expecting that there'll be something like "every PC can get a background or subclass that grants them features to ignore...

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeons of Drakkenheim: a dark fantasy sandbox in a ruined city

This probably isn't the place to have a full discussion on it, but if 1/1000 people are spellcasters.. that seems relatively high magic to me 😆 Even if 2/3 of those become mages with cantrips and spell levels, that still seems like a good number.

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

Some of this isn't news, because we've heard it from @mearls when he talked at cons etc. about how bad DnD was and how WotC was looking at licensing it out. But it's good to hear it from others, plus the new figures are interesting!

D&D 5E (2024) Improving Medicine - one of the least loved skills.

I'd agree, but unfortunately IMO the best ways to improve medicine would be to nerf a lot of the bounce-back/natural healing/resilience of 5e characters.. and then medicine could fill to restore some of it. It was pointed out to me that they get all their hit dice back now from a LR in 2024, so...
