    Building a Fantasy Sandbox

Since it is a fantasy sandbox, you are going to need to start with Dreamwood. You need 4 solid 2x4s at whatever length you want to use to build the framing. And of course the sand. I recommend just buying the play sand in bags from Home Depot or Lowes. Using your magic shovel, dig a shallow...

    Always with the killing

Seems like a pretty obvious solution to ditch the players here. But assuming you cant do that, you could take a single powerful NPC and go Oceans Twelve on their ass. Demand that they accomplish some really hard mission or be destroyed.

Players: it's your responsibility to carry a story.

Poor language use on my part. I shouldnt have said subplots. My apologies. We were talking about the whole game being consumed by romance, and that is not a subplot. I was referring to when the game is dominated by these elements that you are really making your own game up at that point...

Save or Die: Yea or Nay?

This is ridiculous. If you truly believe this, then everything ever made is arbitrary and the word has no meaning at all.

4e/WotC: Pro- or Anti- why do you care?

I don't know that this isnt true now as well. My game is a prime example. I wrote it, did the layout, using donated editing and artwork (over 150 pieces). Nearly 300 page book, sprung from nothing, free to distribute. More amateur efforts are seeing daylight now than ever before, I think.

Players: it's your responsibility to carry a story.

This sounds like True Scotsman to me. Or nostalgia.

Players: it's your responsibility to carry a story.

D&D has no rules for romance. I hate to overuse basketball, but neither does basketball. You can have some homebrew basketball game that involves modifications to the rules. You can give 6 points for 3-pointers. Or 10 points per free throw. Or you can play with 10 players. But you are just...

Save or Die: Yea or Nay?

Methinks you need to use dictionary.com Arbitrary simply means a decision not ground in reason. It could actually be random. It might not be though. If you sat down at a board game, rolled dice and whoever got the highest result won, that would be arbitrary. It would also be arbitrary if one...

Players: it's your responsibility to carry a story.

You can stand on a basketball court and juggle. You are not playing basketball. False equivocation. Not using beholders in your game does not affect the fundamental flow, any more than wearing a funny hat. Playing D&D as a romance game DOES affect the fundamental flow in a profound way. At...

4e/WotC: Pro- or Anti- why do you care?

Or we could be the tip of the iceberg, saying things that the silent majority believes but doesnt care enough to say.

Save or Die: Yea or Nay?

And if it was 1st ed. AD&D, you can just throw away your character and reroll it up on a piece of toilet tissue. There is no attachment.

    Henchman idea?

I would suggest an insane Gnome illusionist who is being kept as a jester of sorts by the Orc chief to spice up long winter nights. He believes he is actually an Orc that has been polymorphed into a Gnome. He believes the world is actually awash in magic which he dispels (his illusion spells) to...

Why *Dont* you like Forgotten Realms?

Attempting to get back on topic. I actually like FG, but if I had to gripe I would say.... 1. The demographics are inherently unsupportable by the technology level. No way that piece of land is supporting multiple cities with 200k+ population 2. Way too much magic. It cheapens it to a...

RPGs about the time of the Napoleonic Wars?

If you are familiar with the period, you could run it with Synapse. There is an Age of Sail setting plugin to bring in the right skills. Check my sig.

Save or Die: Yea or Nay?

That logic could quickly cascade into anywhere in the game world if you are not careful. Isnt the whole point of most games to be placing yourself in inherently dangerous locations? I dont think anyone is dungeon crawling in downtown Des Moines. Unless they are vampires.....
