D&D 5E (2024) Size, Carrying Capacity, Strength, Athletics, Mobility

Personally, I liked the way it was. Same damage, same strength, same of almost everything for the same contribution as a small-sized adventurer; that was a satisfactory trade-off for lack of « realism » as far as I’m concerned. yes, they are smaller, therefore not as much mass, therefore not as...

D&D 5E (2014) Experiment with Equipment Slots, I'd love your feedback

My equipment/encumbrance variant is very similar. 3 levels of encumbrance based on light/medium/heavy. Worked very well for us. Yours looks just as good.

D&D General Styles of D&D Play

I wonder if any game actively supports that. Paranoia certainly encourages it but I don't know it well enough to tell if the rules supports it beyond the "extra life" clones. What "slapstick" requires is tough characters and the ability to be a threat regardless whether you have a bomb or a...

D&D General Styles of D&D Play

Which skills do you see missing from 5e? I know I’m missing a gather information type skill, or some kind of courtesy/intrigue/etiquette or other « function well in society » that isn’t Persuasion or Deception.

D&D 5E (2024) Armaments, replacing equipment with more interesting options.

interesting idea, Unless I missed something, this removes the Dex contribution to AC, which I’m still debating whether I love or hate.

D&D General Styles of D&D Play

But otherwise, I tend to agree with the OP. Even if some play styles are less supported by rules, D&D allows for a wide variety of play styles. The only thing it doesn’t do is give players the ability to affect/change the narrative without going through their characters first, whereas some...

D&D General Styles of D&D Play

5e has the whole personality/ideal/bond/flaw thing, whereas older editions had alignment (or gave it more importance). They might be underwhelming character tools but they are there as a supported aspect of character-driven play. So, points for trying?

Games I own that I'll never play (again)

I've got three boxes full of stuff that's been sitting in my basement for so long I don't remember what's in there... Some Mutant&Mastermind, various 3e book, some Rolemaster. There's got to be many more. One such box I keep as "works of art/collectables", things I thought were well done or...

How Quickly Do You Bounce Off a System?

I like to say that a TTRPG’s character sheet is like a CV. If it doesn’t appeal to me or intrigue me at first sight, that RPG has failed the test. That’s the earliest step where I bouce off a game. Then I look at the art. It doesn’t need to be breathtakingly amazing (though it helps), but it...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sort weapon table by...

B/P/S has very little relevancy IMO. Fortunately, it doesn’t use much design space, so it being there doesn’t bother me. But it was the first thing I dropped I my D&D heartbreaker years ago.

    A neotrad TTRPG design manifesto

nice thread I find the "no rule zero/no golden rule" to be a bit of a misnomer, insofar as many such games do have a rule zero/golden rule clearly stated at some point. They usually go along the way of "this is your game, if a rule goes in the way of what your group considers fun, remove it or...

D&D 5E (2014) Starting a new campaign tomorrow! Thoughts and house rules

This looks all cool, I’d have a lot of fun in such a campaign! I’m concerned that it might be too much however. As much as I don’t want to rain on your parade, take it easy on your players. Only bring up what is relevant for their characters. Only bring up the general themes, not exactly how...

Making a Star Wars hack of The One Ring's system

It’s a good system, very elegant in its simplicity. I just find it a little too simple. I yearn for just a few more bells and whistles.

    What Should the Bard Be?

Well, yeah. Like anyone with some strength and dexterity can fight; it doesn't make them all fighters. I'm not disagreeing with you however, "the artist class" is the niche the bard goes after.

    What Should the Bard Be?

I think that's the idea; that a bard has less to do with music and singing than someone using their wits to get around/manipulate people. Personally, I like to see bards as a folk people first and foremost. Culture and folklore is their interest, and with it comes songs and tales.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would You Play This?

Personally, I’ll play anything a DM is passionate about and enthusiastic to run. I easily get caught in their enthusiasm and have fun. Similarly, even my favourite setting is going to be dull if the DM isn’t into it

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E economics -The Peasants are revolting!

That aligns with the job description of an adventurer’s hireling rather well actually. Well done WotC! :)

    What Should the Bard Be?

I work as a stage technician. We have riggers, sound engineers, lighting operators, production managers… I could go on and on. The bigger the production, the more specialized these jobs get. Days are long with extended periods of intense concentration, and deadlines are inflexible. And then you...

D&D General Tips for Using Paper Character Sheets

Not sure if it’s a « tip » or to what extent this is anecdotal, but rather than going for a «clean», printed type-fillable pdf form, I prefer to print a blank form and fill it by hand. There is something in the act of writing something down that is different from typing on a computer; it...
