Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

And this is probably why my groups don't like it. The story emerges but their objectives are not a story. Their objectives are to get the treasure and kill anything that gets in their way. They have a gamist mindset. Story does emerge though and that is wonderful but it emerges organically.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

You can always put "in my opinion" in front of everything I say. It is tiresome and bad English. And no, I don't mind a bit if you enjoy different things. I don't dislike you for it or think less of you for it. I just like what I like. When I describe how things affect me, I'm speaking from...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

A good DM is not making it up on the spot. A good DM details the adventure and the world ahead of time. And yes, if you really like narrative mechanics then you should pursue those kinds of groups and games. I am always very up front about my position on various issues prior to the start of...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

Since immersion is a state of mind, it can be affected by different things for different people. As a DM, I do try to minimize the need for questions. I describe what they see without being asked. They can say "I examine the chest more closely" which is no different from "I walk over to the...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

That is great if so. If they put that work in and produce quality then they will join the ranks of serious companies. Most won't though.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

This response comes very naturally to those with a gamist mindset. I had the same initial thought. My groups lean heavily into gamism and simulation.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Cosmere, Daggerheart would be in the same category as D&D 5e. I think Warhammer Old World would be heavier. I haven't read Legend of the 5 rings either but I'd guess it's heavier. Pathfinder, 3e are both significantly heavier than 5e so if 5e is heavy then we need another category. GURPS is...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

Those who like the Daggerheart approach are the ones talking about engagement and not immersion from my perspective on those words. Something can be interesting and engaging but still not immersive. Immersion for me is staying in character as much as possible.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

I haven't played all those games but I don't agree that many of them are lighter. Maybe we have different definitions of heavy and light.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I think for me, immersion is like when you are reading and the words disappear. You are still mechanically reading the words but your brain has reached a different level. In D&D, reading is acting in character and using the DM/Player interactions to represent the senses. This can lead to an...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

It is so easy to start a roleplaying game company these days. I do think that most of these "companies" do have one great product that fades away into obscurity. That is because for whatever reason a core book sells a whole lot better than everything that comes after. I can respect Paizo...

He was teaching HIS style of play and what works FOR him.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I also think there is a difference between not wanting to roleplay your character and not wanting to invent the reality of the world. There are of course people who dislike both but they are different. Many of my players will gladly play out their bluff of the King and make up all sorts of...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I'd argue it is vitally important for me. YMMV. This is why D&D is so much more fun a game for me than say a board game. I like both but if I want a board game D&D is not my choice. D&D offers me something far deeper.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

For those who dislike it, it is immersion breaking. It is not for everyone though I agree.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I've found the Alexandrian's ideas about play to be very similar to my own. It is the sort of thing that is game breaking if you don't like it. Perhaps, I could slide on the sword question but if this was baked into the game then I'd pass it by. His ideas about dissociative mechanics helped...

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

I've never played CoC so not speaking to that game (I don't care for horror) but 5e is medium crunch because 3e/Pathfinder fill the heavy slot. Fate would be light crunch.

GURPS Fantasy / Dungeon Fantasy (and beyond)

Is the issue verisimilitude? You could just abstract it and say a turn is a turn and the time is undefined. What matters is what you can do in a turn which may be driven by their official time but to me that isn't always true.

Where Do You Get Your Digital (RPG) Books and Materials?

My two biggest are Drivethru and Warehouse 23. I have bought from Paizo directly. I also get stuff on Kickstart/Backerkit on occasion. My default is Drivethru unless it's GURPS then WH23. My GURPS purchases though of late have equalled everything else.
