Studded leather is a real thing, but for wrapping polearms, and not as armour. What uses would you give it in today's game? I'm thinking that it might give a bonus or even Advantage vs Disarm at the cost of extra expense. 5E doesn't have a Sunder option, but additional resilience there seems...

I have a vague recollection of an adventure in Imagine, White Dwarf, or early Dragon called 'Down the plughole' or similar. The PCs are shrunk by a wizard and sent into his plumbing system.

Those of a sufficient age should read Elliot Kay's short story Days of High Adventure. If you can find the original, so much the better. Neither are PG so I won't give a link, but it's centred around D&D, involves wizards good and evil and a dragon, and the hook is one that will appeal. And...

Your sample PC has better than average stats and better than average armour and a magic weapon and higher than average HP and has DR 3. So I'm not surprised that the CR is higher.

A tweak if I may: no noble would leave their signet ring as payment, so likely Desphina stole it. This plot sounds like a reverse of the background to an adventure in Dungeon where an evil archmage went into voluntary exile to raise an evil prince. It's totally awesome, BTW.

This was trivially fixed in 3E by using a standard progression table and making the classes give a +2 class bonus.

How about romance? The BBEG is an immortal evil wizard-king, one of the last of his race. The PCs accidentally (?) discover a magically entrapped woman of the same race who can communicate with them. Naturally, he desires her, and tries to use the PCs' connection to her, so the PCs have to work...

I like the idea of a series of mini-campaigns. Possibly - but not necessarily - related. Maybe one per tier. That way you can have buy-in and commitment for 4-6 months rather than 2 years.

Take a look at Sepulchrave II's Chronicles of Wyre. It's not quite what you want because normal people are still normal levels but the PCs now contend with epic-level friends and foes and wield real influence.

Valhalla awaits! Such stories are what make roleplaying so fun and memorable.

Give them pre-generated characters. Get them up and running quickly.
