What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

    I quibble strongly.

    Trailer Stranger Things 5

I am really trying to care, but I don't think I can. Which is sad. I really enjoyed season 4 -- the best one since Season 1 IMO. But it has been so long, mustering that excitement is kind of hard.

Subtitles for People That Hate Them

This is fairly specific and niche, but I am not sure where else to ask -- so why not EN World!? Anyway, my wife hates subtitles. She is moderately dyslexic and that makes the experience difficult for her. If it happens once in a while in a show or movie, she can power through (or pause and ask...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

I don't mind if it is generic if it can do that thing (or something like it). But I have found that often these days, bespoke games are usually better for such specific needs.

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

Maybe if I try and dream up an example scenario it will help. Titanic. Like the movie. Maybe on a steampunk airship or a space cruiser or a spelljammer. Whatever, that's all set dressing. But play is how that movie goes. Sure, there is a "fight" but not in the sense that my friend wants to...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

Your list strongly suggests that I was not clear in my question, because neither Deadlands nor L5R should be viable answers to pretty much anyone had i explained myself correctly. I am looking for a game that does not have combat, or combat is an inherent failure condition to the point of...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

That's not it. He wants to play in a game where tactical acumen does not matter at all, not that he wants his character to be bad at it.

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

I appreciate the generic system recommendations, but what about something bespoke? I don't really have a adventure in mind yet, so what is a game that really leans into the dramatic or tension aspects without the combat? That isn't regency romance. ;)

Call of Cthulhu General Thread [+]

I have played in some very good CoC games, but I always feel liek the GMs were what made them good, not the system itself. I often feel like the system fights you -- rolls are often too difficult to feel competent in your so-called expertise, and a GM that calls for too many and/or does not work...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

Thanks everyone that has made suggestions so far. A little background: I was trying to get a friend of mine to try Daggerheart, and he said "If a manager for a Punch and Judy puppet show can't be a viable PC in the game, I probably won't last long." and "I don't want to be forced to be a...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

I am feeling the need to stretch my GMing skills beyond my comfort zone a little, and since I generally like high concept, high action games, I thought I would ask about games that don't rely on action, especially combat, to be compelling. Whether it is romance, mystery, horror, politics or...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

It was a huge PITA when our Rappan Athuk game got high enough level to cast it. Safe resting in a megadungeon pushes hard against the whole point, IMO.

I'm not sure what your point is. We all know as a first principal that we would like different things from a new edition. It's self evident.

I wonder if they gave some thought already to non-adjacent domains. Like, is the next set going to be cross pairs? I don't have the Void stuff in front of me to check.

These discussions can sometimes veer into unintended arguments, so i just want to pause and reassert (for myself too) that I am just talking about my personal desire for a new D&D. If I have gotten a little defensive or demanding, it is probably because having that personal preference questioned...

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

To be clear, I was not trying to convince anyone of any particular answer. I was trying to show that it was not a "meaningless choice" as some folks had asserted.

Again, this is a thing that happens every edition. Some people needed change with 2E --> 3E, and some resisted it (just as an example, it is the same every time). Everyone saying "why don't you play a different game?" are engaging in the same exact "my preferences are more important to me" that...

My point was that those new players would not care if it was different. 5E is not a magic formula.

You are missing the entire point of what I said.
