Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun - First Impressions

I love that old boxed set - it felt like a wonderous treasure trove to me as a teen who was just getting into the game. That said, I think the sepia hardcover they made for 3e is the best FR resource they ever printed.

    Contemporary Simulationist TTRPGs [+]

You’re not wrong. Most of the systems mentioned are from another era and not contemporary. Simulationism seems all but dead. I can’t think of any games that currently have any measure of significant success that can be described in good faith as sim.

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

Over a year since PHB 24 went on sale and they're still talking about initial sales. WotC would definitely remark on strong sales across the year, across the financial quarters in a substantive way if the sale had continued to be strong. They'd remark upon numbers. They'd be specific. This...

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

Audience for D&D has increased by multiples since 5e14 published and that Hasbro isn't supplying numbers and the best they say is that 5e24 is best start over other editions heavily implies sales have been nothing to brag about. I mean, of course 5e24 is off to a better start than 5e14. I should...

    Dragonbane general thread [+]

Totally agree. The dragonbane whimsy never landed with me and I don’t like fantasy games that veer in that direction. Trudvang setting was cool as much as I remember. This KS is a buy for me.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Minions are easy to dispatch and not powerful, hordes are a lot of a thing that might be powerful and act in concert. Super villain mooks vibe minions more than they do hordes. A horde of bad guys who aren’t necessarily high level but also kind of bad ass would be something like a cadre of AIM...

Critical Role Campaign 4, Episode 2: Celestial Horrors and Powerful Houses Emerge as Potential Threats

What I loved about the angel reveal was the sheer size of it. 30 feet tall!

Tell me about your experiences running games at a FLGS

I did my research and I was lucky - a new game store owned up and I kind of jumped on the gaming space that he had available. It's a small shop and he's only got one table avail - I host a private game there which inevitably gets some spectators and a table full of people having fun gaming is a...

Critical Role Campaign 4, Episode 2: Celestial Horrors and Powerful Houses Emerge as Potential Threats

Ok, finished ep 2. Yea, it's tedious and slow but it's supposed to be 120+ episodes, I'm fine with building emotional investment in the characters first before the campaign flings them headlong into danger. There's a few people here expecting Tik-Tok videos which, you know, okay. Lots of weird...

Gaming Journalist Rob Wieland Passes At Age 48

    Well that's absolutely awful.

There are reports that Rob Wieland has passed

At this moment, I can't find confirmation nor denial. Loved his work - he helped bring the tabletop rpg hobby to the mainstream with his journalism. And of course he'll be terribly missed on the forums.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

From my original post: If you feel like you hate campaign durations of that length and wouldn't ever do this, good for you and there's no need for you to post in this thread.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

Remember, it’s a hypothetical. Assume any game you choose has really good VTT support so don’t make it a consideration. You dismiss some other choices as unrealistic, but I’m curious… What are they?

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

Mercer is doing what I've seen other forever GMs do which is play antagonistic characters because they're used to being in that role when they run games. It's mildly annoying because in the case of forever GMs I've known who have done this, it's used to undercut the current GM and make...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

I had such fun with 3.0, and I love that edition of the game more than 3.5. I know 3.5 fixed lot of things but I rather liked monsters being both deadlier and easier to kill. And I liked magic having... as one YT video put it... a more strategic component and less tactical.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

I played in -- didn't run -- a RM2 campaign for a long while about 20 years ago. What a blast. Yea, very sim but I really missed that style of game and the system did a great job of supporting long-term play.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

Lots of great thoughtful replies. And it's time I answer my own question. Earthdawn 4th would be my current choice for a long-campaign. It's extremely 'horizontal' in its advancement - PCs get many choices from tons of talents, abilities and spells and are encouraged - both in game, and...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

What version? Seems like it's hard to assume 5e anymore what with all the love 4e gets and nostalgia for AD&D nowadays.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

It's a hypothetical question, with the following stipulations: 1. The campaign you'll be running will be at least 60 sessions long, more if you wish. 2. It's a fantasy campaign but the subgenre is whatever you want it to be. Heroic, grim-dark, military, whatever. 3. Can be any rpg system since...

    Fabula Ultima general thread [+]

Yea, we did play a few games of this last year. Lots of fun, lots of cool subsystems, some gaming technologies that feel fresh and exciting for a heroic fantasy genre. It's a love-letter to JRPGs which I can't fully appreciate because I don't have a nostalgic view of them from back in the day...
