    D&D 5E (2024) I just got a 2024 PHB From Gen Con. AMA!

Is Heat Metal still no save? Any standout changes to Counterspell, Force Cage, Simulacrum, or Wish? Does Spike Growth still do damage per 5' square an opponent moves through?

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

Interesting. For my money, the updated race/class level limits were the most often used content, followed by weapon specialization.

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

AD&D 2nd Edition is an interesting case. And here, I'm going to focus on the part of 2e that comes before the Player Options era, and also before some of the late 'faux leather splatbook' era (I think everyone agrees that era having some very clear power creep). Now, 2E comes out and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance shouldn't be optional

It is certainly part of the problem that so many save-or-penalty effects are 'lose all of your action(s),' which is uniquely debilitating to boss monsters*. As well, oftentimes the effect still leaves the sufferer vulnerable to attack*, without** ability to then test again or spend resources, or...

D&D 5E (2024) How many of you would implement the drop to 0 HP, get 1 level of exhaustion house rule?

I think the notion that having a PC go down is a failure of the team as a whole more than the individual certainly rings true. Perhaps an answer then is to preserve the basic premise, but swap out exhaustion for something else. Perhaps a party where a PC drops to 0 gets a 'Morale' or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength bows?

If we were to implement this paradigm, a whole slew of martials would be Str15, Dex as-high-as-possible.

At MLB, did you work for The Los Angeles Angels*? *for the English-Spanish bilingual, 'The the angels angels'

    Best John Williams themes! Go!

You joke (I think), but even a lot of his scores for... products of lesser overall quality, shall we say... are often quite good. I remember both Sabrina and The Terminal being overlong and underwhelming (and Stanley & Iris being just a forgettable romance), but the scores were still of the...

Time Bandits: The Series Official Trailer (2024)

Stipulation: We all get that you aren't impugning Kudrow's talent or as a person. This is about role/casting. Well, they try. It doesn't always work. Going back up to my Wallace Shawn example, I watched the original trailer for The Princess Bride, and I would love to be able to view it without...

Time Bandits: The Series Official Trailer (2024)

Kudrow's style is a different permutation of comedy than we've seen recently. Kind of a comedic character-actor given main-character billing*. It's interesting to watch her play effectively the same character in two shows-- in Mad About You working off of general-actress-in-a-comedy-role Helen...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

I think a lot of what Gygax wrote, and wrote mostly quite well, was an instruction manual for a style of gameplay that didn't/only partially materialized for many. The AD&D books (especially the DMG) work best when they seem to be trying to be take #2 on oD&D played in the manner originally...

Resolve conflict through boning? I can see it. I would've picked sloth, just to explain the 'Kirk-speak.'

    Was Thac0 really that bad?

I'm more adamant than most in the 'hey guys, can we please stop trying to posture our nerd cred*?,' but even I don't think this is just** people trying to show up to win the discussion. It's just the kind of thing that people regularly mention being a nightmare, and people who didn't have all...

I've been saying it for the longest time, the people who are worst to nerds are other nerds trying to establish dominance.

D&D 5E (2024) What Spell Sage Advice (& Descriptions) are you afraid won't be "fixed"?

I'd like them to revisit Tiny Hut in general, but that's probably another thread. They would have been so much better off either consistently saying "The DM must make a determination" or frame all SA as "The way I would rule is..." Or, as mentioned, simply state the intent of the rules text and...

D&D General Professor DM from Dungeon Craft has a special message…

Everyone should be aware of their body, their health, and the screening options available to them. You should get checked and screened as recommended. You should also consider getting checked earlier* than recommended -- provided a negative experience there will not keep you from going back...

Keep on the Borderland and no healing...?

I mean, the reaction tables exist for a reason. A party (perhaps one bearing gifts, even just a couple heads of your enemy) coming up to your door (instead of through it) talking about a team up to get rid of those pesky <other group> 'once and for all' might change the dynamic. Or at least...

Keep on the Borderland and no healing...?

Use your best judgment on healing potions and scrolls. Quick check -- are you using morale rules and reaction checks? IMO, the module is purposely designed to be a real slog if the PCs just go out and resolve all problems by violence to extinction. Instead, they are supposed to make (short...

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Also, I think a lot of people remember BX or BECMI rules (particularly combat rules) as part of AD&D because they started with one of those sets. They moved to AD&D, but really played the old system, just with AD&D classes and monsters and weapon charts and such.
