    D&D 5E (2024) Why are you still playing D&D?

5e is what my friends are running and I like playing RPGs and hanging out with them. We also have a game of OSE that is semi in motion. DnD (any version) isn't necessarily a requirement for me to play RPGs though, I'm happy to run or play in others. I tried to get a trial run of savage worlds...

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Theory crafting has rarely, if ever, had anything to do with actual play.

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

I don't actually feel like spell slots need to be reduced and, in fact, I'd have a slight increase gaining an extra 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level spell slot at class levels 12, 14, and 16 to get rid of those levels where no additional spell slots are gained. This is assuming that 5.5 kept the same...

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

I go with the following if I even need to define them. Caster. Base class has spellcasting Martial. Base class gains an ability that improves their weapon capabilities (extra attack or sneak attack) Hybrid. Made up of both Caster and Martial, tend to lean on one more than the other. Paladin...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Sometimes. Denial can simply be "No, I'm not moving from a single office to open plan" but ultimately you go anyway because the decision isn't yours. Then, if you have good change managers, you move through the steps to acceptance.

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Fireball hasn't been a great spell since 2e when a 5th level wizard had a good to fair chance of killing ogres with it. Since 3e the hit point bloat of monsters and other NPCs means it just softens them up a little.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I remember there was an adventure that required an all elf party, and this was for BECMI so elf was the class. This meant no thief or cleric (though maybe elves if alfheim was out so that the elves still had healing magic) so just a bunch of fighter/wizards running around.

EN World What you thought a thread title said.

I don't know if it's because I saw your post before the original thread, but now this is the only way I can read that thread title.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I think 5e has reduced the need for a balanced party (requiring a mix of classes with main roles); you can run all wizards or all fighters or all rogues and do absolutely fine. Older editions may have run better with a member of each class (like the classic combo of fighter, rogue, wizard, and...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Sounds good. Have you played winters daughter? I'm thinking of running that first, from what I've read of it, it sounds like a great little adventure.

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

To the best of my knowledge, our 5e group is sticking with 5e instead of moving to 5.5. We also have other rpgs that we play, a friend has just picked up dragonbane and I have some dolmenwood adventures to run.

What are you reading in 2025?

I'm starting on the foundation series by Asimov. I'm starting with prelude to foundation before moving onto the trilogy. I've been loving the tv adaptation so finally getting around to reading the books. Actually, I'm also checking reading orders and the recommendation is to start with the...

When did the "C" drop from CRPGs and when did "TT"RPG spring up?

I must be old, I still use CRPG as a term. I only sometimes use TTRPG if I absolutely need to define that I mean a table top game, most of the time I don't need to though.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

Star Trek enterprise is one of my favourite trek shows. I think I liked that it was the start of earth's exploration of the stars.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

For me, The Rise of Skywalker was underrated, I really quite enjoyed it after the last jedi which I felt was a let down. Last jedi still had some cool bits, but there were parts of the film that I felt could have been left out.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

Like you, I've never managed to complete lord of the rings or the hobbit, Tolkein was such a boring writer. I've watched the movies, though not the hobbit trilogy (could not be arsed watching that as a trilogy).

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

I do something similar rather than defining actual numbers. On rare occasions it somewhat matters like when I ran a mass battle for my group, but actual demographic information I like to use a system taken from Matt Colville and define how likely you are to meet a certain race. He used the...

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

I can't do an actual demographic breakdown because I don't work with real numbers. Races that are dominant are: Human (original humanoid race) Genasi Dragonborn Giants and Giant-kin Elves Dwarves Beastmen (orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, ogres, gnolls) Secondary races are Gnomes Halflings Tiefling*...

    Jurassic Park RPG?

I'm looking forward to the movie. If I was gonna run it as an rpg, I'd just use savage worlds, seems a good fit.
