D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Hrm, WotC didn't make a lot of modules, even if it would have been called for (Ship combat, Spelljamming, How to Magic School ...) but I find it quite easy to create, modify or take out rules out of 5e (2014, haven't looked to deep into 2024 yet for modifications). 5e 2014 is super easy to...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yeah - like, you don't need a statistician. Like, for new DMs a good advice is, to play out encounters they plan in advance to see how it could go and to see how they could use the creature abilities to their advantage - it also helps run encounters more smoothly. And then you would also see if...

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 3: Magazines

It was UK only. Hatchette Partworks LTD wouldn't even deliver it to Germany or any place outside of UK and the times I went to UK to visit my In-Laws I couldn't find a copy at any Shop that sold magazines - not even in a Tabletop-Shop! I would love a new (print) D&D Magazine. It should contain...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Now I may run those ghoul ^^. To restat the current ghoul and with saving throws in mind - it gets Multiattack back, 1 claw attacks, +4 to hit, doing 1d4+2 damage and DC12 or maybe 13 con save.l for paralysis. 3 of those shod have a decent chance to paralysis 2 PCs (levels 1 to 4) per round if...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

So 3 attacks per ghoul per round that had like a 50% Chance to inflict paralysis? Damn.

Also even the best open World sandbox videogames are limited in what they can allow you to do. Like, even in Baldurs Gate 3, you pretty fast feel the limit of what is programmed in as options and what not. Like, the first chapter with the druid grove, I had so many ideas of what could be done...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Oh, cool. I didn't know that story. I started D&D way after the 5e playtest. Yeah, I can totally imagine, without saving throws, 3 Ghouls (DC 10 paralyse) would paralyse approximately 1,4 PCs per turn. That would get nasty very quickly.

Sorry, I must have missed that, what was the ghoul surprise?

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

So, I'm running a spelljammer-campaign right now - so "Pirates in Space"? Basically. The structure of my campaign is the following: The Players started at level 1 and had no ship at all (woke up with no memories on an asteroid) - acquired a Space Hopper when they got to Level 2 (a small raft...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

So, I did the math for a simpler more elegant solution, used by all casters, putting them.in a long rest shedule: When you finish a long rest, you regain a number of expended spell slots equal to your spellcasting ability modifier (minimum of one). You must restore lower-level expended slots...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Nah, the solution is simple: Pawn-Shop rules. If the PCs sell, they sell for half the price or less, if they buy, they buy at full price.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

If standard would be the standard price, poor weapons would get too cheap, in my book. But also I followed the wealth by level guidelines for the prices, which are crazy which makes weapon prizes if you want to stretch them over the first ten level extremely spread. That would be need to fixed...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

But this are way more assumptions and making up details where there are none. But that's the point, there are "ounce" or "20 ml" vials/very small vials in the Gear Guide, that have no weight. Like, yes, if you want to houserule that drinking a healing potion is a bonus action, than 20ml makes...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

But they are listed in the DMG as one item with 4 variants:

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

That's the problem of 5e. There can be some more elegant solutions like, recover the lowest 1 or 2 spent spellslots (or number of spellcasting modifier) and put all other ressources lkle KI, Rage and so on on a long rest recovery. That would be actually simpler. Time to work on V.2 of the...
