What Games do you think are Neotrad?

...Or at least played in a Neotrad way? I'm very, very interested in discussion in regards to this playstyle because I'm invested in it becoming more developed and mature despite it already being such a dominating force in TTRPGs I'll copy the definition for Neotrad from the lbog...

    D&D 5E (2024) Speculation Welcome: What's Next for D&D?

Western geek culture definitely, but Anime and Japanese stuff still has a decent enough 'churn'.

    D&D 5E (2024) Speculation Welcome: What's Next for D&D?

And very very good if you don't like 5e! Hell, it's not like many 5e players comprehend or buy the books anyways.

If you really want to look at the new gen hotness, anime is where you'll find them

    D&D 5E (2024) Speculation Welcome: What's Next for D&D?

So? I'm not seeing much negatives there. it's like complaining that there's different Fast Foods and everything should be McDonalds, or that it'd be great if only Chrome existed. You may see TTRPG systems as standards while I see them as individual works of creativity.

    D&D 5E (2024) Speculation Welcome: What's Next for D&D?

This is the difference between you and me, because I think the latter would be better overall for the TTRPG industry as a whole.

Worlds of Design: Reassessing Tolkien’s Influence

I do think that right now, what's inspirational for the common fantasy nerd isn't literature but video games and TV/Movies.

D&D 5E (2024) I'm a longtime player and there really is only one thing that will stop me from switching to 5.X

Unironically great for me. 5e winding down is such a good time to me

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

It's good that 5e is being thrown away actually. I think it's good that less people are playing DnD specifically.

    Pathfinder 2E Ranged rogue

You gotta make sure to have your buddies have a lot of ways to inflict OFF-guard for you to be a ranged rogue(Kineticists with the Ice stance, Trippers, etc, etc)

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

TradOC was just something that I thought would be more appropriate as a term because after talking with the writer of the blog, the article that he linked used the term differently(Basically hybrid storygame+trad game design mostly used in swedish game circles). I had a reddit post using it and...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

It's probably the difference between making a Naruto/FF14 OC and making just an OC

MCDM Patreon Playtest Packet 1 is out.

How did the Conduit play like? Like how did it gain resource and what kind of powers did it have?

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Actually, let's think about what does make a setting conductive to TradOC play? Flexibility is of course something that's a must to allow the insertion of a new character in it, and usually the setting and premise shouldn't be so restrictive on what the background entails for the play--You can...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

You can see this in games with very intertwined settings like CofD, Eberron, or Exalted.

D&D General D&D as a Game- On the Origin of Hit Points and Start of the Meat Debate

That's exactly why I've completely believed in Meat Points, every single media that uses HP treats them as such because it makes total sense. No need for trying to justify why they don't bleed to death from a sword slash, they just have more flesh and blood than the wizard. What Gygax and every...

D&D General Does D&D (and RPGs in general) Need Edition Resets?

Variety, If 4e didnt exist i probably would have looked at WotC's design capabilities with an even less favourable eye. I desperately want 5e to be less backward compatible than onednd because there are some fubdamental issues I just do not find palatable in any sense of the word, I want its...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

I prefer calling it TradOC because I do still agree that it's very much a descendant of Trad design.

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

IMO OC-play can be delineated between Positive Space(Powersets, Mechanical Rewards, Setting) and Negative Space(Backstory, PC relations with N/PCs, etc). In fact, for some players the narrative satisfaction part of TradOC can be switched with ludic satisfaction--Playing a pyromancer means...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

I think there are also two different starting point but mirroring one another: Narrative and ludic. Making a character concept backwards from ability/power-set, and not necessarily meaning stuff like Pyromancer or Enchanter but something similar to how card games have 'gimmick' decks or certain...
