    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

If saying that business requires some moral basis is overly political, than I should change my department to Political Science, since I teach business ethics regularly.

Fortress America: When Gaming and Politics Collide

Well, these last two posts are an example of what I found compelling about the original text: It takes that history of aggression and expands it to absurd lengths. And I think the Afghanistan example is apt here. The original text noted that the U.S. was attacking, not gratuitously, but as a...

Jeff Grubb on WotC and layoffs

Well, there may be a few stars that make that kind of money in Academia, but even professors at R1 universities in the United States seldom see that kind of salary. The ones that do are generally full professors with university appointments and some personal cache (e.g., Cornel West, a nobel...

Fortress America: When Gaming and Politics Collide

I have to admit I am sort of mystified by those who think its somehow innately offensive to portray the U.S. as the bad guy, even in a clearly science fiction scenario. You really don't have to scratch too hard to find examples of real American irrational aggression (Spanish American War, more...

Maybe the nature of he weapon is explained in the rules.

Fortress America: When Gaming and Politics Collide

I find the idea of hovertanks offensive. EDIT: Dammnit Gronin, I can't give XP for XP!

Fortress America: When Gaming and Politics Collide

See, now although I differ in some minor ways with what GreyLord has written, I guess I'm hung up on the fact that this is, aside from any incipient political critique it contains, a science fiction premise. One needn't argue that the U.S. is doing or is preparing to do what the game describes...

Jeff Grubb on WotC and layoffs

Absolutely true, from the company's perspective. From the writer's perspective, though, anything they can do to increase their personal brand is absolutely in their interest to do. Spiderman didn't cease to be Spiderman when Kirby went to D.C., but Kirby's personal cache went with him. I think...

Fortress America: When Gaming and Politics Collide

Yeah, I'd say the first text sounds better, more engaging. The second text reads like they just got slammed and decided they had to write the most neutral prose they could in order to avoid further controversy. I would have sent it back to marketing and said, "You've now replaced inflammatory...

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

That actually adds a good bit of very disturbing perspective of what these layoffs have meant.

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

I believe that is an "Office Space" reference, and the stapler is being taken FROM the person being fired, not being given TO them as severance.

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

Or hey, here's a thought: How about coming up with a business model that allows you to sustain roughly the same level of employment for multiple years in a row, thus making layoffs a relative rarity instead of your special holiday gift to your employees. Crazy, I know.

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

I don't think I'll ever understand the idea that a) you should lay people off right before the holidays, thus ruining them, and b) laying off your best and most experienced employees. And don't explain why it makes economic sense. I'm not talking about the economics here.

Good Book for Improving Chess Skill

I should warn you, my father stopped playing chess with me after I read this book, since I went from always losing to him to always winning. So you may need a copy for yourself!

For those with HBO - new teaser for Game of Thrones season 2 tonight

Ah Stannis! You think you're so right, but nobody likes you!

Good Book for Improving Chess Skill

I haven't really dedicated myself to improving my game for a long time. But when I did, the one book that helped me really improve my game significantly was Yasser Seirawan's "Play Winning Chess."

Hero Lab - do you use it?

The latest on the Mac version, according to their newsletter of last week, is that it's scheduled for a probable January release, which is good. Plus current owners can download the open beta by the end of December, which I plan to take advantage of as soon as I can. Of course, now that I have...

Walking Dead, Season 2, midseason finale (spoilers)

In all, a very good episode. I think the show is at its best when it steers clear of gratuitous gore and focuses on the main conflicts within the group. All that said, I think its definitely time for Shane to die. I noticed that Rick's son is now wearing Rick's hat, which says to me that...

    Walking Dead season 2 (spoilers)

There is a bit of a Checkov's gun situation being set up with all these missing characters. When a character disappears under such circumstances, there's an expectation that they WILL show up again, and in a dramatically satisfying way, wether is Merle, Sophia, or the father and son from early...
