    GM fiat - an illustration

Well, video games come to mind as games with no rules: video games have programs. Unless your saying 'rules' and 'programs' are the same things. Board games and sports are both examples of Very Limited Activities. In order to make the activities fun and safe, tons of very tight restrictive...

    GM fiat - an illustration

Rules help some people: the people that put the rules high up on a pedestal. In a lot of RPGS the GM can do whatever they wish on a whim, and the players are utterly powerless to do anything other then complain or leave the game. With the High Rules, a player could snap quick and say "DM you...

    GM fiat - an illustration

This is not true as the DM does not 'represent' a side. A good, true DM is impartial and neutral. They present a world that makes sense in the simulated game style, with the twist of "it's a game" not "reality". The easy example here is when the DM creates foes. A good true DM creates foes...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

I would say teleport other is way too powerful for a 2nd level spell. That is just me.

    GM fiat - an illustration

Well, the OP here is using "DM Fiat" as "the DM taking any action independent of the rules". A game rule can tell a GM what to do within some very set limits. Or a game can have nearly no 'GM rules', so the GM can to whatever they want absolutely on a whim. This is "dm fiat" to some as the GM...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

Perfect example of player bias and how players are not impartial . "We the players approve of the special use of this spell where only DM controlled monsters that swallow whole PCs can be teleported away to free the swallowed PC, Only! "Any other use of the spell that might effect our PCs does...

    GM fiat - an illustration

It should be very clear to all. 1. A unique role playing game experience simulating reality like nothing else 2. Like a board game As a member of the other side, I can show this. In Touchbearer nearly everything that happens is framed or controlled by the rules. So the GM, exactly like a...

Missing players and other players running their PCs

I consider this to be a player decision. Some times a player will ask another player to run their character...and that is fine with me. More often I will just remove the character from the game.....often getting 'detained' by guards or something like that.

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

I think you missed the trick: the kobold caster would cast it on their ally, not the PC......

how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

Though a lot of novels as do the "demi god main character vs the zero level world", and this is the default for most TV shows and movies. Though this is a much bigger problem with any action adventure faction. It is fair to say that most of the FR writers, authors, editors and such don't know...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

This is the fun kind of ruling that can ruin a game. Most players are super happy to say "sure the 2nd level spell can teleport away any monster that swallows a 'poor' PC". And many will say it is true for a grapple or other such holding of a creature. Many might do it case by case, where...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

I agree, and was speaking more in general. Either for players that agree with the Rule of Cool idea or the players that just trust me to do whatever 100% with no whines or complains ever. Sure, a lot of players....when asked "how would you like some fun Super Harsh and Deadly Consequences...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

As a Rule of Cool Fun type DM who is happy to flick the rulebook off the table: I would allow this. BUT I would be very, very firm that using the spell effect in this way, while cool has very high cost. And I would make it clear that such a cost can be anything, up to and including character...

how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

True And the above is just the tip of the iceberg. More then a couple taverns or shops have something like great wyrm dragon 30th level sorcerers owning them. So when a someone started trouble they could just casually freeze the person in time. The average magic shop had a iron golem for...

how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

The Classic Forgotten Realms, back in 2E, had the median level of Toril as 10th. So roughly half of the world was above and half the world was below 10th level. Though it is not an even spread, as most people are in the 1-3 level and 11-12 level. A typical average person starts at 1st level...

D&D General If we were re-designing the Tiny Hut-esc 'instant shelter' spells what would we change?

Well, the 2024 version has the big fix for Tiny Hut of only blocking spells of 3rd level or less. For 2014 5E, I did always use the older edition line of "Missiles, weapons, and most spell effects can pass through the hut without affecting it.". The 2014 version only blocks creatures and...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Guess this depends on what your counting as epic and beyond epic. You can have low level PCs save a kingdom, but they can't do all that much....but sure you can have the story just "fix itself". Agreed. And I'm a long term play type GM. Most of my games run for years, as I look for players...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I guess this matters if you feel forced to have a game exactly like is published. Or more Combat as Marvelous Entertainment Well, what about only high level games can have high level epic, or beyond epic stories and plots? I think most would just super power their characters....or simply do...

D&D General Why Aren’t the strongest Outsiders Closer in CR?

There is a philosophy that has been around forever that "the bad guys must be stronger then the good guys to give the characters foes to fight." The story idea is, at least, to have most good beings always need to ask for help from the "powerful characters" to make a good story. You see it...
